Spotlight on Students

The Anxiety Project

The Anxiety Project is a project designed by psychologist, Michael Hawton, and the NSW Primary Principals’ Association to assist primary students to manage their anxious behaviour. Michael Hawton is also the founder of Parentshop, providing education and resources for parents/carers and industry professionals working with children. This article, ‘Not every act of meanness is bullying’ which is the third of a series of six articles, explores how parents/carers can support their child to interpret events proportionally and create resiliency.

School Bands Australia Band Camp

Last weekend (15th-17th September), School Bands Australia held a Band Camp for over 150 students. Over the weekend, students from many different schools worked intensively to learn new pieces of music, which they performed in an impressive combined orchestra on Sunday afternoon. They sounded amazing!

The theme was “Band in Space”. Students performed a medley of space-themed tunes, including the Star Wars main theme.

Iris (3/4D, clarinet) and Harry (6G, percussion) did an outstanding job representing Dundas Public School at the camp and worked very hard throughout the weekend.

Thank you to the School Bands Australia conveners, Mr Davison and Mrs Demicheli, as well as our amazing conductor and tutor, Miss Fownes, for dedicating your entire weekend and giving students this fabulous opportunity.

Jeans for Genes

The Student Representative Council (SRC) hosted a very successful ‘Jeans for Genes Day’, which raised almost $700 for the Children’s Medical Research Institute to continue their vital research into finding cures or treatments for conditions affecting children. Students wore denim mufti on the day and purchased ‘Jeans for Genes Day’ merchandise to support this worthy cause. Thank you for your support!

CAPA

We have had another fabulous, jam-packed term of CAPA focusing on Music, in particular pitch and rhythm. We had the wonderful "Rhythm Works" concert incursion run by Musica Viva which introduced us to unusual instruments such as the vibraphone and thunder drum and homemade instruments such as the chameleon suit made out of buckets and PVC pipes. We made our own rainsticks, experimented with different time signatures and body percussion, explored rhythm with bucket drums and cups and pitch with xylophones and boomwhackers. K-2 learned and performed some musical theatre songs AND we also began learning some music theory - musical notes and the role they play on a stave with a treble clef! Have a wonderful break. Looking forward to Drama in Term 4!
