College Chaplain

My dear graduates of Marian College,

Today, as we gather to celebrate your accomplishments and send you forth into the world, I am reminded of the words of the Apostle Paul in his letter to Timothy: "I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth" (1 Timothy 3:14-15).

These words, my dear graduates, are a reminder of the strong foundation you have received within the walls of Marian College. You have been nurtured in an environment that has encouraged academic excellence and the development of your character, faith, and values. Like Timothy, you have been equipped to go out into the world, to face the challenges that lie ahead, and to be beacons of truth and goodness in a world often marred by confusion and darkness.

In today's Gospel reading, we hear the words of Jesus comparing this generation to children in the marketplace. He says, "We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep" (Luke 7:32). These words remind us that the world can be a noisy and distracting place, a place where people may not always respond to the messages of truth and love that we carry within us.

But my dear graduates, do not be discouraged by the world's indifference or resistance. Remember that you are children of the light and have been prepared to make a difference. Just as Jesus continued to preach and live out his message of love and redemption, even when some did not respond, you must persevere in your commitment to live out the values you have learned here at Marian College.

Our Marian School motto is "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life" – these words are not just a motto but a guiding light for your journey ahead. They remind us that Jesus Christ is the ultimate source of all truth and the way to eternal life. As you step beyond the walls of this college, I offer you these words of wisdom in the spirit of Marian College's motto:

  1. Live with Integrity: Be honest and honest in all you do, for Jesus is the Way. Let your actions align with your beliefs, and let your words be a source of truth and encouragement for others.
  2. Embrace Diversity: Just as Marian College has been a diverse and inclusive community, seek to embrace and celebrate the world's diversity, for Jesus is the Truth. Respect the dignity of every person you encounter and be instruments of unity and reconciliation.
  3. Serve Others: Jesus came not to be served but to serve. Carry this servant's heart with you as you embark on your journey beyond these walls, for Jesus is the Life. Look for opportunities to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
  4. Prayer and Reflection: Continue to nurture your relationship with God through prayer and reflection, for Jesus is the Way. Seek wisdom and guidance from the One who is the source of all wisdom and truth.
  5. Never Stop Learning: Education does not end with graduation. Be lifelong learners, open to new ideas and experiences, and committed to personal and intellectual growth, for Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

As you leave Marian College, my dear graduates, remember you are not alone. You carry with you the prayers and blessings of this community, and you are equipped to be pillars and bulwarks of truth in a world that so desperately needs it.

May you finish strong in this chapter of your life and embrace the journey ahead with faith, hope, and love, guided by the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Congratulations, Class of Year 12. Go forth and be the light that the world so desperately needs. Amen.
