Term 4, Week 1

Welcome to Term 4, which is always the busiest term of the year in a school. This year is flying!

This term, our students will be busy reading more great books, completing some research projects, working on Drive folders in readiness for Secondary, and finishing the year with some wonderful Christmas stories.

Author Visit - Dr Cameron Stelzer

We’ve been waiting a long time but today is finally the day that Australian author and illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer is visiting Holy Trinity School to run workshops with our Year 3-6 students, and Year 9/10 Visual Art Class. Year 3-6 students will be taking a behind-the-scenes look at creating a book and applying their own creative components. The Year 9/10 Visual Art class will be exploring the inspiration behind Cameron’s illustrations and engaging in a hands-on drawing component. Students and teachers are looking forward to a great day!

In conjunction with the Author's Visit, Holy Trinity families have a special opportunity to purchase signed and personalised copies of Cameron’s books at special prices. Individual books are $10-$15 each and there are also exclusive book sets available. Students will receive an order form on the day of the workshops (payment is via the online payment portal listed on the form; no cash). Forms can be returned the following day, to the Office.

This Week’s Reads

Kindergartenare continuing on from last term, exploring non-fiction and fiction and being able to look at a story for clues to know the difference. This week, they’re learning some amazing facts about dogs in ‘Pet Dogs Up Close’ by Erica Shore and comparing it to ‘Pig the Star’ by Aaron Blabey. One tip I always give to students is, if an animal is talking, it’s fiction!

Stage 1 - are reading the beautiful ‘Our Dreaming’ by Kirli Saunders and Deb Luffler, learning about the importance of the Dreaming in Aboriginal culture, and then illustrating some of the new words found in the story.

Stage 2 - are being introduced to the term ‘genres’ and learning about how fictional stories can be grouped into topics. Students are then listening to the first chapter of a book (‘How to Train Your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell) and listening for clues as to what genre it is.

Stage 3 - will be completing the book trailers they started last term and (hopefully!) sharing them with classes in the coming weeks. Not only have students been busy learning how to use iMovie, they’re having to think about what’s the best way to promote their chosen book to an appropriate audience. In the coming weeks, I’m looking forward to commencing a graphic novel unit which students always enjoy/

New Book Sequels Coming

There has been a large number of sequels to very successful book franchises released and many of them are already in the library and others are on their way. I've no doubt they’ll be very popular so get your reservation requests in quick. I suspect I'm going to need quite a few copies of the ‘160 Storey Treehouse’ and ‘Bad Guys 18’. Non-fiction and animal-loving readers will want to get their hands on Sami Bayly’s latest book too.

Reminders

  • Please remember to bring a library bag on the day of your library lesson. These really help protect the books.
  • Students can place reservations on books by completing a slip at the Library counter

Coming Up - Term 4 Book Club

Coming home soon will be the final Scholastic Book Club catalogue for the year. It’s a great opportunity to get in early for Christmas and if you let us know, we can hold books for anyone wanting to keep them as surprises. We expect catalogues to be going home in the next few weeks.

Meet the Reader

Meet Scout in Year 7. I had to get a photo of this new book with her beautiful and unique name in the title.

Some secondary students chillin’ in the library on day one of Term 4.

Have a great week, happy reading.
