Feisty Futsal

On Thursday the 16th of November, Beaufort Secondary College sent our Year 7 and 8 boys and girls Futsal teams to Woodmans Hill Secondary College in East Ballarat, to compete in the Eureka Futsal Competition. Futsal is a five-a-side soccer competition that is traditionally played on a gym court.

The girls played five matches, managing to draw one of them. Hazel Coleman was excellent in goals all day with her outstanding goalkeeping, while Skye Dridan was great with her strong defending. Chloe Mitchell put together strong performances throughout the day, winning a lot of 50/50 balls and Macey Howlett did a good job, finding pockets of space all over the court. Issy Johnston took out the award for biggest kick of the day, with her leg being mistaken for a canon due to her powerful kicks.

The highlight of the day came when Katie Mahoney performed a backheeled cross, with Dakoda Brydson on the receiving end, resulting in a goal!

The boys' team had their first match against the home side, Woodmans Hill. Liam Sage was excellent in Goalkeeper, with plenty of saves, while Zavier Duff was great in defence. Harvey Grant applied good defensive pressure when hustling the opposition defenders. Unfortunately, the boys lost four nil.

Their next opponent was Mount Clear Secondary College. We were resolute in defence with many great block and tackles, particularly from Billy Welsh and Zavier Duff. Javiar Drinkwater was everywhere in the first half, throwing himself into contests and looking lively. When the ball went out for a side ball with five minutes remaining, it was talisman, Aris Damalas, who took it. Aris loaded up and rifled a shot, the ball deflected off a defender and went through for a goal, giving Beaufort a one-nil lead. Mount Clear Secondary College managed to claw one goal back, before the last two frantic minutes, in which neither side scored, resulting in a one-all draw.

The boys' final match was against Phoenix P – 12 Community College. Kody McDonnell looked dangerous up forward and it appeared that he may have scored, when he cannoned a shot off his non-preferred left boot. However it wasn’t to be, with the ball hitting the side netting instead. Phoenix, who went on to make the final, ran out three-nil winners.

Thank you to everyone who made it an enjoyable day. Thanks to Mr. Webb for organising the day and taking training in the lead up, Mrs. Fisher for coaching the girls’ side and Mr. Green for coaching the boys’ side.
