After extensive research and feedback, the School’s Wellbeing Team recommended transitioning to a Vertical Wellbeing structure for Term 4. In making this recommendation, the Wellbeing Team considered evidence from various schools and academic sources in Australia and internationally. We also received feedback from our students, indicating their desire for more connections across age groups. The evidence supporting this trial suggested that students would benefit from new friendships, increased empathy, the confidence to lead and engage in courageous conversations, a safe place to explore and discuss wellbeing topics, and a greater sense of House and School spirit.
When we proposed the Vertical Wellbeing trial, we committed to seeking feedback from staff and students in Week 8 to assess the effectiveness of the trial. The feedback collected has provided positive support for the School’s approach to Wellbeing, emphasising the significant connections our students have with each other and their Wellbeing Mentor, as well as the importance they place on having the opportunity to engage in conversations and activities relevant to them. Feedback from Head Mentors highlighted an increase in House spirit, engagement in Social Justice activities, and the efficacy of our Student Leaders to engage their peers in meaningful conversations, foster positive cross-year peer relationships, and lead House activities with confidence and purpose.
Within the feedback, there was also significant support for the established Year Group approach to Wellbeing. When given the opportunity to reflect, staff and students were able to articulate their preference for a structure that allows staff to focus their pastoral efforts on one year group and a structure that provides students the opportunity to connect with their peers on significant academic, wellbeing and social issues.
By implementing a Vertical Wellbeing structure this term, we acted on student voice and evidence-based research to evaluate the effectiveness of an alternate structure to help us achieve the best wellbeing outcomes for our students. Looking forward to 2024 and in light of the feedback collected, the School will revert back to our established Year Group approach to Wellbeing. From Term 1, students will be placed with their previous Mentor and peers based on their year group and House.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to our staff and students who stepped out of their comfort zone to embrace this trial and to those who provided valuable and insightful feedback on both the Vertical and Year Group approaches.
Wishing you and your families a safe and happy holiday.
