Year Four Team News

with Rebecca, Katie & Matt

Hello Year Four families,

Fortnightly Curriculum Focus

Literacy: The students have been reading the mentor text The One and Only Ivan about a silverback gorilla living in an American mall as an attraction. Students have loved listening to Ivan and his friends' antics, and exploring their emotions when retelling stories about their lives prior to the mall. We have also discussed character traits and made lots of inferences.

Students have been spending their writing lessons working on their stop motion movies. They have created sets, characters and furniture to create their scripts in 3D. They have had many learning curves, working out how many photos they need to take to create a full scene, and how much (or little) to move the characters.

Numeracy: Students had the opportunity to revise their addition knowledge by practising adding larger numbers and unpacking worded problems. For example, students need to know that there is more than one way in a worded problem that tells us to add numbers together. These could be; sum, altogether, total, both, plus, join, combine and join.

The students have also practised their multiplicative thinking by multiplying double digit numbers. They have been learning about the place value holder and extended to multiplying decimal numbers.

Inquiry:  Inquiry this fortnight has seen the students plan and begin an information text about something worth saving. For example, students have chosen an interesting range such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Great Barrier Reef, Uluṟu and the Colosseum to name a few. Students have been given the choice of how they want to present the information and will continue working on it into the next fortnight.
