Interschool Sport

News

2023 has been a massive year for interschool sport at Belmont High School. Over the year Belmont students have represented the school in 82 teams participating in 16 sports including for the first time Surf Life Saving. We have had both outstanding team performances with a number of teams winning through to Western Finals and 2 teams making State Finals as well as individual students making it through to state finals in Athletics, Swimming and Cross Country. A special mention goes to Cameron Ricchini in year 12 who placed in 3 events at the State Swimming Titles and Finn Callachor (Year 9), Harry  McDonough (Year 9) and Marley Walker (Year 8) placing in events at the State Athletics Finals. In the team sports our Senior Boys Cricket made the state semi Finals as did our Senior Boys Hockey and Year 7 and 8 Boys Baseball.

For the first time Belmont High School  participated in Life Saving Victoria’s school carnivals being the only Government school to do so. None of these students had any experience in the events but still manage to have a number of students finish in the top 3 in flags and the beach relay events.

Thank you to all staff who helped train and coach the sporting teams this year and a massive thank you to Grace Jones who joined Belmont High School this year as sports assistant. The mountain of work Grace put in behind the scenes in booking buses and ensuring all the documentation was completed for teams to leave the school was amazing. I look forward 2024 in making sport and Belmont High even more successful.

Junior Boys Baseball State Finals Report

It was a couple of days for our Year 7 and Year 8 Boys Baseball teams, as they represented Belmont HS at the Victorian State Baseball Finals. Our Year 8’s were first up on Tuesday 14th November, with a 6:30am departure from BHS ensuring it was a bit of a sleepy first half of the trip to Cheltenham Baseball Club in Melbourne.

We had a bye first round so the boys had plenty of time to stretch the legs and warm up once we got off the bus, and this ensured a very active and high-scoring first match against Cheltenham High School (who had a much quicker trip to the event I’m sure). The boys battled hard throughout the whole game and were able to level the scores at the end of the 3rd innings at 12-all. Needing to win our second game against Balwyn to advance to the final, we missed a couple of opportunities to get runners home when bases were filled and were not able to take our chances in the field. Balwyn were able to convert their opportunities and seal the match in the third innings. The whole team should be very proud of the way they conducted themselves through all three stages of the baseball competition this term, especially since the majority of the team had played very little baseball beforehand. A big thanks to Brandon, Gus and Scott for helping education the team to turn them into State finalists!

The Year 7’s were up bright and early as well on Wednesday 15th November, and had a relatively smooth trip to Cheltenham as well. The boys had a quick warm up (special thanks to our baseball ‘expert’ Riley Peoples from Year 9 who came along to help coach the team. All three games throughout the day were of a high quality and extremely tight, with our team going down 8-7 to Brentwood, 10-9 to Frankston, and drawing 6-6 with Macleod. A fantastic effort against the best in the state and I’m sure the team will ready to come back bigger and better next year as part of the Year 8 team! Well done boys!
