John Monash Science School Science Fair 2023

The JMSS Science Fair, held on November 20th, was a source of excitement and accomplishment as students were challenged to explore and answer the broad question, "What is happening in Science?" Our students were tasked with selecting a topic that intrigued them, encouraging a sense of ownership and curiosity. The range of options provided, along with the freedom to propose their own questions under the guidance of a JMSS mentor, further empowered students to take an active role in shaping their scientific exploration.

The hands-on aspect of the Science Fair, particularly the opportunity to conduct experiments, emerged as one of the most engaging elements. This approach not only deepened students' understanding of their chosen topics but also enabled them to collect and analyse data. The opportunity to present allowed for creative showcasing of experimental findings, emphasising the importance of clear visuals and concise information in effectively communicating research results.

The culminating event, the JMSS Science Fair, added an extra layer of excitement to the process, motivating students to ensure well-prepared presentations to share their research methodology and conclusions with peers, teachers, and parents. The evening also gave them an opportunity to explore the scientific explorations of peers, JMSS students and visiting schools from around the country.

In conclusion, the JMSS Science Fair was an enriching experience that not only deepened our students’ understanding of a scientific concepts but also allowed them to develop essential research and presentation skills. The event successfully fostered a culture of curiosity and exploration, making science an engaging and rewarding endeavour. We look forward to future opportunities for scientific inquiry and exploration within the JMSS community.

Shaya 5C-  Exploring the JMSS students presentations and some of my favourites were extracting the DNA from a strawberry and identifying how rare my fingerprints are.

 

Sahana 5C-  I learnt that there are many types of fingerprints, even having names which are arches, loops and whorls. I also learnt that a strawberry has DNA

 

Ananda 5E- I enjoyed sharing with others what our group had done and seeing other presentations.

 

Shriya 5A-  I liked sharing our presentation and looking at other peoples. I learnt about how to separate a strawberry from its DNA.

 

Senul - 6E

At last the moment has arrived, the little scientist expo. As I looked around, I saw many mind boggling stalls with crazy science experiments. However, my favourite stall was called life beyond our solar system. This stall was created by the year 11’s astronomy team, this project featured much information about exoplanets, complicated math equations and some puzzling question. Overall, this was an outstanding experience for me. 

 

Nevon - 6F

Going to John Monash science school was an honour, my favourite lesson was the first one where we created parachutes for an egg and dropped it off the second floor and watched it glide down. This was my favourite because I loved how we had to think outside the box and how we can get the egg to safely drop down. Even though we failed I still had a lot of fun creating the parachute and when we went to the expo on Monday, to share our findings for different paper plane design it was nothing short of spectacular.

 

Gargi - 6C

Going to John Monash Science School was a really special experience. We got an opportunity to explore new and exciting scientific branches, in engaging and clear ways. My personal favourite was making the parachute with the egg, straws and other simple materials, as we had to challenge our brains to think of a cost effective and sturdy design. Sharing our experiment at the John Monash Science Fair was an honour, as we developed our knowledge on planes and how to write a scientific report. Seeing other peoples’ creations were also super fun to see. Thank you to all the people who made the JMSS experience memorable and engaging!

 

Olivia - 6C

During this wonderful experience at John Monash Science school, we learned a lot of things, like: Chemistry, Physics, Biology and much more. My favourite part was the biology experiment, it was meaningful and interesting.  We got to look into microscopes to see those fascinating microorganisms, we learned about how and where different microorganisms grow and also their living conditions, we discovered that rainwater can be a place where multiple sea microorganisms live and grow, onion skin is covered by numerous cells. During this process, we also learned about the structure of microscopes.
