Year 10

On Tuesday 31st October,  Year 10 students attended the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) workshops at “The Meadows”  in Broadmeadows. The day was filled with a variety of practical learning activities to provide students with the tools, habits and motivation to take action and stay safe on our roads, throughout their lives, as both drivers and passengers. The program addressed, in a real and practical way, the many dangers and challenges young people face on our roads. The highlight for most of our students was the stopping distance demonstrations by a qualified driving instructor in the car park area at “The Meadows”.

Continuing on with our driving theme this term, The Melbourne Museum along with TAC, visited PLSC on Tuesday 14th November, to facilitate the Roadsmart Interactive Incursion. Students rotated through different stations to learn about safe driving behaviour and the impact of road trauma. Most enjoyable were the Virtual Reality Headsets, which gave students a realistic experience of the road.

Year 11

As we come to the end of the school year, the year 11’s have been working diligently and enthusiastically to complete coursework throughout the year.

Throughout the term both classes were able to implement great community engagement initiatives to raise awareness to support a cause of their choice. 11B were able to raise donations/awareness towards drug addiction whilst putting together a morning tea for the college. 11A ran activities at lunch time whilst collecting donations for the salvation army to raise awareness for kids in foster care.

During the year students were involved in several incursions and excursions to prepare for year 12. The first incursion was a Cyber Safety incursion delivered by Victoria Police. This workshop educated students on the current laws relating to internet use and the dangers that can arise when using the internet. The second incursion was a Respectful Relationships workshop, which gave students an opportunity to safely discuss the challenges of being young adults in society and the demands of engaging in relationships with others.

Students finished the term strongly by taking part in an excursion at the Melbourne Zoo. This allowed students to demonstrate their teamwork and communication skills to navigate and direct each other around the zoo. This was a huge success for many around the college.

I have had the privilege of watching these students grow and flourish into young adults. I wish them nothing but success and happiness as they finish their studies at Peter Lalor Secondary College. It has been an absolute pleasure and my year as a teacher wouldn’t have been so successful without the support of this cohort.

Year 12

On Monday 23rd October, all Year 12 students had the opportunity to complete their Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate, with the majority of students taking up this offer. Students in attendance, completed the unit after exploring components relating to the legalities of the supply of alcohol, harm minimisation techniques and employer/employee responsibilities. All students actively participated in the session, asking clarifying questions to ensure they understood the content. This has pathed the way for students to be able to work in the industry, including in RSL’s, casinos, pubs, bars and nightclubs. We hope students capitalise on this experience and walked away having some confidence in this area.

On Tuesday 24th of October, the year 12 students had the opportunity to attend the RIJI (Real Industry Job Interviews), a program which allows students to practice their interviewing skills in a simulated environment. As with a real interview, they had to make their own way to the Plenty Ranges Arts & Convention Centre in South Morang. Everyone arrived on time and dressed to impress, ready to undertake their individually tailored interviews.

There was a lot of preparation that went into the RIJI before they even stepped foot in the building. As a part of their WRS units, all students found their own job listing and went through the process of creating a cover letter, resume, and answering some key selection criteria. Their work was then sent off to the organisers of the RIJI to find someone in their chosen industry to interview them for the job.

By all accounts, our students impressed the interviewers with their knowledge and communication skills. They proved themselves ready for the challenge and came out the other side with interview experience that will serve them well in establishing themselves in their future careers.

Well done year 12!

Our year 12 cohort finished up their schooling on Thursday 26th November and celebrated their educational journey with a dress up day, activities including karaoke sessions, followed by pizzas for lunch. Students were treated to their own photo shoot in their costumes with Sian Gregory using her technological skills to produce a unique background setting for each photo, relating to the theme each student chose to embrace. We wish our year 12 students a wonderful break before they enter, or advance, into their chosen pathways whether that be further study, education and training, or employment. Well done on a productive year and we hope to hear of all your successes in the years to come.
