Level 6 Legacy Piece

Vincent Van Gogh, one of the great Masters of Art, painted many sunflowers throughout his life. Van Gogh saw sunflowers as a symbol of friendship and welcome and he decorated his guest bedroom with his sunflower paintings to welcome visitors. Van Gogh made 5 different versions of his famous sunflowers in a vase.

Level six studied Van Gogh’s sunflowers as well as real sunflowers and produced sketches, concentrating on the actual shape of the petals and leaves. Students then examined texture in clay and how to use different tools to make a variety of marks. Finally, students created a bas relief sunflower that incorporated their previous and newly learnt knowledge.

The sunflowers were joined to cylinders, fired in the school kiln, and painted with underglaze and a clear glaze on top. Finally, the cylinders were joined together into three totem poles and placed in the school grounds as a symbol of friendship and welcome to the families and friends of Jells Park Primary School.

The totems are in the Junior Play Ground near the sandpit, please drop by to see the beautiful work of our Level 6 students.
