RIST Wool Overview

Anne Gough

Fourteen interested Year 9 students participated in the RIST Wool Overview Program, held on March 31st and April 1st, 2025, at 1 Kings Rd, Purdeet. Delivered by RIST staff with support from Australian Wool Innovation, the program offered a hands-on introduction to the wool industry. Activities included on-farm visits to leading wool producers, exposure to the shearing shed and an understanding of the importance of OH&S operations and industry standards. Students participated in shearing, rousing and skirting and watched wool classing demonstrations. The instructors were most impressed with the students’ interest and keen involvement.

Students explored career pathways within the industry ranging from wool growing and classing to brokering and fashion design. Insights of the full wool production pipeline, from animal husbandry through to processing and sales, including wool store and auction floor operations were also illustrated. With group-based challenges and interactive sessions, the experience aimed to build both practical skills and industry awareness, helping students connect classroom learning to real-world agricultural opportunities. The day offered a valuable immersive look into Victoria’s wool industry.

This opportunity has given the students wonderful information to consider regarding the options offered at Monivae in VET Agriculture for Year 10 subjects next year. These options include a Cert II in Agriculture done as either a VET course at SW TAFE or as a SBA at RIST.
