John XXIII Rowing Club

Dear Rowing Families

Our first regatta of the season was a great success, with John XXIII winning the overall shield, as well as having a lot of fun and some challenging races throughout the day.

We have our rowing camp occurring over the first three days of the holidays, which will be another opportunity for the rowers to challenge themselves and gel within their squads and as a Club as a whole. A note was sent out on the STACK Team app with the schedule for rowing camp.

If students can not attend rowing camp, we encourage them to still be active over the holidays so they can jump straight back into a boat in Term 2.

JTC IGSSA Regatta

We are hosting the first regatta of the IGSSA School Girls season on Saturday, 10 May. This is a major fundraising opportunity for the Club as a whole, as we do not host an All Schools regatta.  Please refer to your respective year WhatsApp group for more information, or speak to me or one of the Committee Members.

Donations for the raffle can be dropped into the PE Office. Each family is asked to also contribute a cake or slice to sell at the regatta.

Volunteers are also required to help at the regatta, including helping at the cake stall, barbeque duty and dinghy drivers.

April Holidays Camp Dates

A reminder that the rowing camp is split into a boys’ day, a girls’ day and then on Wednesday, a combined day.

  • Monday 14 April – boys
  • Tuesday 15 April – girls
  • Wednesday 16 April – both boys and girls.

Please note: This camp will be an additional $300 and will be added to the Rowing Fees. Please register here.

South West Head of the River

We had a large contingent of the Rowing Club travel to Bunbury to compete in the South West Head of the River. Unfortunately, the conditions were too rough for our juniors and freshmen to race their sculls and doubles, but every rower got the opportunity to race over the shortened course. There were some close races between our rowers and the other schools and I hope that everyone learnt from the experience of rowing in difficult conditions.

2025 Year 8 Learn to Row

We have had a great response to the Year 8 program and registrations are still open if you want to participate in this program in Term 2. This year, we are trialing the Year 8 Learn to Row program with morning sessions instead of afternoons. This allows Year 8 students to train alongside the Years 9 to 12 rowers, the water conditions are generally better in the morning than the afternoon, and students are not returning from the boatshed at 6pm.

Students participate in one water session at our Canning Bridge boatshed (Tuesday or Wednesday morning. An afternoon session will be considered if there is interest), and one session at school in the afternoon either on the rowing ergometer or doing circuit training specific to rowing.

Rowing sessions:

  • Tuesday morning 5:30am (bus departs school at 5:05am)
  •  Wednesday morning 5:30am (bus departs school at 5:05am)

All rowers catch the bus back to school which returns at approximately 8:10am prior to school commencing. If it is more convenient, rowers can be dropped at the boatshed and then catch the bus back to school. Morning sessions are mixed with both boys and girls in the same boats. The land session is held from 3.30pm to 4:30pm at the school, combined with the rowers from Years 9 to 12 with a mixture of rowing ergometer and circuit exercises.

  • Girls' land session at school is on Monday afternoons from 3.30pm to 4:30pm, commencing on Monday, 5 May.
  • Boys' land session at school is on Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm to 4:30pm, commencing on Thursday, 8 May.

Sessions commence in Week 2 of Term 2 and will go for nine weeks. Year 8 students will be given the opportunity to race in two regattas at Champion Lakes on Sunday, 15 June and culminate on Saturday, 28 June. Year 8 students are also encouraged to participate in the House Regatta on 23 August in Term 3.

The cost of this program is $375. Please complete this form to register: Year 8 Learn to row registration form.

Please contact me if you have any queries.

Uniforms

The new Zootsuit is now in stock at the Uniform Shop. There is also a training top that can be worn under the Zootsuit. The only compulsory item is the Zootsuit for racing at regattas.  There is stock of the old zootsuit which can be worn for training.

Stack Team App

Please download the Stack Team App if you have not already done so. This app is one of our main avenues for communication with rowers and their parents. This is the central place for training schedules, training updates, and rowers can contact their coach in case of illness or injury and missed trainings. It is important that all rowers and parents have access.

To get this app please go to the App Store or Google Play and download Stack Team App onto your mobile device, then follow these simple steps:

  1. Sign-up to Stack Team App. You’ll be sent an email to confirm your registration.
  2. Log-in and search for JTCRC, then request to become a member.
