Discovery Day

On Tuesday 25th of March in Week 9, all the Year 6’s went to Western Port Secondary College for the day. We went on a bus leaving Bittern at around 9am, we arrived early so we a free play on their equipment while we waited for the other schools arrive.  Once the other schools arrived, all the Year 6’s gathered up in the assembly area where they were introduced to the teachers and the care Captains. The Western Port teachers explained what we were going to do and assigned each school two Care Captains.  One of our Care Captains was a person from our school last year.

Our first subject was S.T.E.M where we did robotics, we used computers to program the robots in each group. The challenge was to have our robots follow the tape that was on the ground. Most groups were successful at this as we learnt quickly through a trial and error process. Afterwards we had recces where we ate some snacks to get our energy back.

Next, we had English, we started off with a game called two truths and a lie, to get to know our teacher. Then we got some paper, a dice and an activity sheet.  The activity was to use the dice to randomly allocate the main parts of out story, for example if you rolled a 3 in the setting section your story may be set in outer space. Once you had a main character trait, setting and complication selected you could write your story. Some of our stories were very inventive.

The following session was P.E with the leading teacher who is a coach at Crib Point Football Club. He had two assistants who were studying at university to become P.E teachers. During this session we played a variety of games together such as capture the flag, octopus and three spots. It was a lot of fun. Once we were finished, we went to have lunch where we caught up with quite a few past students.

After lunch we had our final session which was Humanities where we learnt about the types of jobs that children our ages had during the war. Some of these jobs were quite disgusting and a lot of them were very dangerous.

Before we caught our bus home we had another assembly where the Care Captains placed all of their raffle tickets into a container and drew out the name of someone who had contributed something interesting or helpful during our sessions. Daisy was the winner for Bittern Primary School, she won a Western Port show bag.
