PE/SPORT

Term 2 has kicked off with energy and determination in our PE program as all year levels have been preparing for the House Cross Country Carnival! Students have been lacing up their runners and working hard on building stamina, pacing, and technique through a variety of running drills, fitness games, and endurance activities during PE lessons.

On Wednesday, students represented their house teams in this much-anticipated event. Beyond the fun and house spirit, the carnival also serves as a selection event for our District Cross Country Team, with top-performing students earning the opportunity to compete against other schools in the district event on Thursday, 15 May.

We’re proud of the effort and enthusiasm students have shown so far—it’s been a busy and active lead-up, and everyone gave it their best on race day!

Auslan (Australian Sign Language)

Grade 4/5/6

This term in our Auslan (Australian Sign Language) lessons, students have been enthusiastically expanding their communication skills by learning a wide range of practical signs. They explored everyday verbs such as run, walk, and want, enabling them to express basic actions clearly. In addition, students learned to sign key places in the local area, including school, shop, and hospital, helping them describe familiar environments. The lessons also introduced important directional signs such as turn left, turn right, forward, as well as compass directions like north, south, east, and west. These new skills are building students’ confidence in using Auslan to navigate and describe the world around them.

Grade 2/3

Our our Grade 2 and 3 students have been diving into the world of cooking through Auslan lessons! They’ve been learning a variety of instructional signs used in the kitchen, helping them understand and give directions more clearly. Alongside these, they’ve also explored signs for a wide range of cooking utensils and tools, including oven mitt, oven tray, peeling, pizza cutter, plate, potato masher, rolling pin, saucepan, scales/weight, sifter/sieve, sink, tea towel, tin foil, and mix. These lessons have combined practical language learning with hands-on kitchen knowledge, making Auslan both fun and meaningful in everyday contexts.

Foundation/ 1

Our Foundation and Grade 1 students have been exploring basic feelings through Auslan, learning to sign emotions such as happy, sad, angry, and brave. A key focus has been the importance of facial expression in sign language, as it plays a vital role in conveying meaning and emotion. Our young learners have embraced this with enthusiasm, often showing their feelings clearly through expression alone. It’s been a joy to see their confidence grow as they connect language with emotion in such an expressive and creative way.

Visual Arts

Our Visual Arts program has been buzzing with creativity across all year levels as students wrap up their vibrant string art, and expressive self-portraits. Each class has also launched into exciting 3D projects, exploring either paper mâché or plaster mâché techniques.

Foundation/1 students have taken to the skies with colourful papier-mâché hot air balloons, learning how to layer paper and glue to build form.

Year 2/3 students have been introduced to papier-mâché through their whimsical Bottle Birds, inspired by artist Barbara Kobylinska. Using recycled materials as armatures, students are sculpting expressive bird forms while developing their understanding of texture and inspiration from contemporary artists.

Year 4/5 artists are delving into the world of plaster mask-making, using newspaper and plaster of Paris to form sturdy, expressive designs. Students are exploring the difference between paper mâché and plaster, and will continue this project over the next few weeks using colour, pattern, and detail to bring their themed masks to life.

Year 5/6 students are planning and designing papier-mâché dog sculptures, focusing on building realistic or expressive forms using mixed media. They’re learning to research, plan materials, and construct armatures before layering and decorating their 3D artworks.

It’s been a term full of hands-on making, problem solving, and artistic experimentation—stay tuned for our creative displays!
