Grade 5/6

Classroom

We have had a very smooth transition back into school for Term Two and we look forward to the exciting activities that are on offer this term such as Cross Country and the year 6 trip to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

English

In English, students have been engaging in daily Oral Reading Fluency groups, reading passages that directly connect with our new inquiry topic on Biological Science. These sessions not only build confidence in reading aloud but also deepen understanding of the content.

Our focus on summarising and paraphrasing texts has supported students in developing clear and concise writing skills, particularly as they begin drafting their own information reports. We have explored the structure of these reports, emphasising the role of visual aids like graphs and diagrams to help communicate key facts. Students are currently researching an animal of their choice to showcase their knowledge.

In grammar, we have explored different types of nouns, including proper nouns, collective nouns, and possessive nouns, enhancing the accuracy and detail in students' writing.

Mathematics

Over the past two weeks in Mathematics, students have been deepening their understanding of fractions. They have worked on representing fractions with related denominators, finding equivalent fractions, and making connections between fractions, decimals, and percentages. These foundational skills are setting them up for success as we move into our current focus on multiplication. This week students will be beginning to apply strategies for solving multiplication problems efficiently and exploring the role multiplication plays in real-world contexts.

Inquiry

Our new inquiry topic on Biological Science has sparked lots of curiosity as we explore how animals adapt to their environment. Students have already taken part in hands-on experiments, including one investigating the importance of opposable thumbs—giving them a first-hand look at how physical traits can impact survival and daily function. This unit continues to integrate with our English and reading program, allowing students to research, discuss, and present their understanding of animal adaptations through a range of engaging tasks.
