Round Square

Embracing Environmentalism and Global Connections at Oakleigh Grammar

This term, Oakleigh Grammar has been actively engaging with the Round Square IDEAL of Environmentalism, fostering awareness and action across our school community.

In recognition of Clean Up Australia Day, our Middle School students participated in a pastoral session where they used recycled materials to collaboratively create displays. These displays carried powerful messages about the negative impact of waste on our environment. Students demonstrated both imagination and insight as they worked together to construct meaningful and thought-provoking messages.

We are also thrilled to announce that a delegation of two teachers and four students will soon be travelling to Western Australia to take part in the Round Square Footprints of Unity Conference. Hosted by Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School and Scotch College, this conference will focus on Internationalism, with an emphasis on Culture and Adventure. Our students will immerse themselves in Indigenous culture through activities such as exploring ancient caves, engaging in traditional art, and participating in outdoor adventures that deepen their understanding of Australia's rich heritage.

In the Junior School, our Year 4 students will take part in a Worldwide Show and Tell, sharing their favourite books with students from schools across different countries. This exciting initiative will take place in our school library, facilitated by the wonderful Mr Gregory Watt, and will help foster global connections through the joy of storytelling.

As a whole-school initiative, we will also take action in support of Earth Day by committing to switching off classroom lights or reducing technology usage during Period 5 on April 22. This initiative aligns with our school's commitment to sustainability and reinforces our responsibility to a more sustainable future.

Our Environmental Club has officially begun meeting, with enthusiastic discussions on new sustainability initiatives. We are exploring ideas such as composting programs, expanding green spaces, and implementing sustainable actions across the school. We welcome Middle and Senior School students to join us in making a meaningful impact on our school community and the environment.

It has been an inspiring and action-packed term at Oakleigh Grammar as we continue to live out the Round Square IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Adventure, Leadership, Service, and particularly our dedication to Environmentalism.
