On Sunday 2 March, our talented students participated in the Halloumi Festival, adding a touch of musical excellence to the event. The Byzantine Choir participated by performing two songs. A special highlight was our Year 3 student, Vasilis Kaimakakis, who showcased his impressive bouzouki skills, receiving warm applause and admiration.
On Sunday 16 March, Oakleigh Grammar was honoured to take part in the commemorative event organised by the Australian Greek Ex-Servicemen’s Association Inc. Our students participated in the doxology and wreath-laying ceremony, paying tribute to the heroes of 1821. The School Captains, Natasha Kaniadakis and Alexander Korlos, proudly laid a wreath on behalf of our school, demonstrating our deep respect and gratitude for those who fought for our freedom.
On Tuesday 18 March, we held a special Junior and Middle school assembly to commemorate Greek Independence Day. This event was attended by esteemed dignitaries, including His Grace Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne, Father Stavros Kakavas, Father Chris Dimolianis, Father Panteleimon Laskaridis, Mr Tony Tsourdalakis, President of the Intercommunities & Parishes Council of Victoria - Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, Mrs Maria Triantafyllou, Acting Coordinator for Educational Affairs Australia and New Zealand, Mr Chris Damatopoulos President of School Board and other Board Members. The entire school participated in the annual Greek Parade. With great enthusiasm and national pride, our students marched together, proudly representing Oakleigh Grammar. It was a spectacular event that showcased our commitment to our Greek heritage and honoured the courage and sacrifices of our ancestors.
Finally, on Tuesday 25 March, was a day of reflection and remembrance. Our students attended a special service at the Hellenic RSL, paying tribute to the heroes of 1821. Another group of students participated in the doxology at Sts Anargiri Greek Orthodox Church, where they joined the community in prayer and commemoration. These moments of reverence allowed our students to connect deeply with the historical significance of Greek Independence Day.
Oakleigh Grammar continues to celebrate Hellenic culture and history. Through these events, our students continue to embrace and honour the rich traditions of our ancestors, ensuring that our cultural heritage is preserved for future generations.
