School News and Information
STAGE 1 NEWS
K/1 Magpies
This term, the Magpies have been busy, working hard and creating some fantastic work. We’d love for parents and grandparents to stop by our Magpie room to check out our displays. Below, you’ll find a snapshot of some of the key learning outcomes we’ve explored over the past four weeks. Also, with our Easter Hat Parade coming up in the last week of school, it’s time for students to start thinking about what they’d like to create at home!"
K/1 Magpies writing
Students have been putting in a fantastic effort during our writing lessons! We’ve been diving into Eric Carle’s Book of Amazing Animals, which has taken us on an exciting journey through the animal kingdom. Students discovered that animals live in all kinds of habitats, from lush rainforests and arid deserts to vast oceans and snowy mountains. They explored key words like habitat, diet, and appearance, using them in their mini projects about their chosen animals.
K/1 Magpies Maths
Over the past two weeks in Maths, students have been exploring different ways to combine numbers to make a given total. They have been practicing strategies like counting on from the larger number, identifying patterns, and using doubles and near doubles to solve problems. We’ve also introduced the bar model to help represent numbers visually and explored different ways to record numbers using words, numerals, and familiar structures like dice and ten-frames. These activities are helping students build a strong foundation in number relationships and mental math skills!
K/1 Magpies Science
Over the past couple of weeks in Science, students have been learning about the basic needs of living things. We watched Tommy’s Pet Grasshopper and discussed the importance of air, water, food, and shelter, comparing a grasshopper’s garden home to one in a jar. Using the eBook Whose Home Is This?, students explored different animal homes and how they provide for their needs. In the coming weeks, students will choose a bird they’d like in their garden and design a special home for it!
Assembly Performance
Last Friday the K/1 Magpies and Year 2 Possums presented at assembly. We also had a great time celebrating Harmony Day and wearing orange.

2 Possums
We have had lots of exciting learning in and outside the classroom for the Possums. In English our focus has been on phonemes and graphemes to support our spelling.
Students have been learning about the text structure of informative texts beginning from Eric Carle’s Book of Amazing Animals. They chose their own animal to focus on and these were presented at our assembly. With some indoor Brain breaks students have been dodging and ducking through some cave systems.
In the past two weeks we have begun our Cross Country training on Tuesday’s with the Dingoes and Emus. Students have shown some excellent commitment and are improving rapidly.
One of our outside learning opportunities was for Mathematics. The focus was on measurement over the past fortnight. Students have measured volume through estimating and measuring using sand. The goal was to find a container that matched the volume of Baby Bears cup from Goldilocks. Students were able to find 3 containers to match baby Bears. We have also been learning about measuring length in chalk in the playground. We discovered what would happen if we took a more fun path when travelling and what would be the difference in distance. Students have also explored how to best measure area with consistent shapes.
