Year Two

Transport Then and Now
What a fantastic end to our How We Organise Ourselves unit! Year Two students have been exploring our third line of inquiry: ‘How transport has changed over time’. Students have been writing informative pieces on their chosen modes of transportation. We inquired into how they have changed from olden days to modern-day transport. We looked at what they look like, how they’re used, how they have changed, and whether these changes are positive or negative! Students have been using their learning from reading and inquiry to put together their own books. There have been so many amazing discussions and lots of deep thinking happening in our classrooms!
However, the learning doesn’t stop outside the classrooms! We have also been interviewing our parents or grandparents on various questions about how they use transportation and what has changed since they were our age. We learned so much from them and could incorporate some of our learning into our writing.
In reading, we have been looking at non-fiction text features, and we have applied this learning when creating our own books. Our books have titles, labelled diagrams, and different headings/sections. We have been exploring how these features help us as readers and how to use them ourselves as well.
To top it all off, we had an ENPS parent and member of the police force come and chat about how transportation helps connect emergency services and the community. We even had a special police helicopter fly by our oval and do a couple of loops to wave at us! What an experience and a big thank you to Ash for sharing with us!
