Year One

Curiosity Leads to Discovery: Exploring Art in Our Classroom!

Our Unit of Inquiry, 'Curiosity Leads to Discovery', inspired a creative exploration in Year One. Students experimented with different materials to express themselves through art and discovered that creativity is limitless when we are open to new possibilities.

Guided by the book Ish by Peter Reynolds, students embraced the idea that art doesn’t have to be perfect - it’s about exploration and self-expression. Our classroom transformed into an interactive art studio filled with unexpected tools - bubble painting, rollers, clay, icy pole sticks, rubber stamps, and even nature scavenger hunt rubbings! Each station encouraged students to engage with materials in new ways, challenging their thinking and encouraging creative problem-solving and discovery.

Throughout the process, students reflected on their experiences by asking thought-provoking questions:

  • How did I create my artwork?

  • What new materials worked best?

  • Why is experimentation important?

  • Did my ideas change as I created?

By taking risks, students made exciting discoveries about both art and themselves… and it was so much FUN!!!
