Wellbeing & Inclusion
at Willy
Willy Kids know that other people matter. Our Junior School Councillors are always discussing how they can give back to the community and the meetings are alive with ideas. Over the years, the JSC have raised funds for numerous charities and organisations, and our Year 2 students have been supporting those in need at Christmas for a long time.
This term, the Junior School Council has chosen to support the Good Friday Appeal for the Royal Children’s Hospital. We would be hard pressed as a school community to find a child who hasn’t ever visited the RCH! For those who have, you know it is an amazing place, with a committed team.
Our Willy Kids were able to give back to the community and support the Royal Children's Hospital through a cupcake stall on Tuesday. The students (and teachers) very much enjoyed a cupcake (or two), and a sincere thank you is extended to our JSC staff leaders Kayleen Dumic and Bianca Italiano, the JSC students members and all our families who donated the cupcakes for sale. We are now able to donate just over $1800 to the Good Friday Appeal. What a wonderful community we live and work in.
Interestingly, there are many wellbeing benefits to giving back and donating time and resources to our community.
Being charitable:
Makes you happier
Giving to charities – whether monetary or donated goods is a mood booster. Helping those in need can make you feel more content and fulfilled. Research has shown that there is a link between making a donation to charity and feeling joy.
Strengthens personal values
Social Conscience is a widely given reason on why people donate to charities. When questioned, many individuals stated that they felt a moral duty to help others when they can. These personal values and principles were commonly found amongst individuals.
Introduces your children to the importance of generosity
Educating your children about donating teaches them about the importance of helping others. Sharing this experience from a young age can be valuable. It shows that they can make a positive impact in the world and that no amount of help is too small. Encouraging children to be generous can strengthen their attitudes towards helping others.
Inspires those around you to take part
Your actions can encourage those around you to take part and donate to charities too. Family giving strengthens relationships through a shared goal and raises more money collectively. Working with family and friends can increase the positive impact.
