Athletics day

On Tuesday of Week 6, The students participated in our college wide athletics day!

It was great to see 60 of our year 9 students engage in a range of track, field and fun events!

NAPLAN

Over weeks 7 and 8 students have completed their final NAPLAN tests ever! The students started off NAPLAN enjoying a pancake breakfast prepared by Paula (advocate). The students did a fantastic job and showed great determination and resilience during the tests. To celebrate finishing their final NAPLAN test, the students had a hot chip lunch on the Friday of week 8!

Outdoor Ed Surf Camp

During Week 6, we had the Year 9 Outdoor Education students head to Wilson’s Prom to shred some waves! Here’s what the students reported about the camp:

“My experience at surf camp was really good! I had lots of fun surfing with my friends. When we finished our surfing lessons we got to hang out at Tidal River. One of the afternoons, we had left all our towels and clothing on the beach, however, the tide was on the way in and drenched all of our belongings!” - Millie

“Surf camp was a really great experience. I had an amazing time doing a range things, from surfing to swimming in Tidal River. We had three swimming sessions, and the instructors were really helpful. It was amazing to spend time with my mates at the beach. One of my favourite moments was watching the sunset at Whisky Bay. I would like to say a big thank you to Ange, Miss Dodd and Owen for putting up with us.” - Leah

Live4Life

The year 9 cohort had the opportunity to learn about Live4Life during year 8 last year. We were very fortunate to be able to send 3 students to a presentation day to learn more about Live4Life. These 3 students will be joining “The crew” and will be our live4Life ambassadors and will support the school and Headspace in promote teenage mental health.

If you are interested in learning more about Life4Life, I recommend heading to their website www.live4life.org.au where there is a wealth of information.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

As previous years, we will be continuing the use of Kurnai Positive Acknowledgements (KPA’s), it has been fantastic to see students working hard and showing determination to display all of Kurnai’s four pillars. Keep up the great work!

Year 9 Camp

Year 9 Camp will be a discovery camp to Melbourne ran through the company DOXA. Students will get the opportunity to explore venues such as the Queen Victoria market, Melbourne Cricket Ground and Eureka Skydeck.

We are now accepting consent/payment for the camp via Compass, there are a limited number of places available on this camp (60). The Yr 9 Team Leader and Campus Principal will have the right to remove and refund students if their behaviour/attendance prior to camp doesn’t align with our school values. A waitlist will be created for any students who wish to go after the event is full.

We acknowledge that the limited spaces available may cause some frustration for parents and students. If you have any questions, please contact me via email ryan.mayo@education.vic.gov.au or call 5132 3700.

Expectations

As a cohort, we have been focusing on key expectations for our Year 9 students. The three main areas we are working on are:

  • Arriving to class on time
  • Bringing all necessary equipment to class
  • Wearing the correct uniform.

The year 9 cohort has already taken a major focus on students arriving to class on time. As a cohort, we identified that arriving to class on time was a weakness during week’s 2, 3 and 4. The cohort was set the challenge of cutting the amount of lates in half. The students achieved this goal across weeks 5, 6 and 7.
