PREP NEWS

Dear Prep Families,

We have had another busy and exciting week in Prep, filled with new learning experiences and special celebrations!

Literacy

This week, we met Leo the Lion (/l/) and Vicky the Vulture (/v/). Students have been practising identifying these sounds in words, blending them together, and using them in their reading and writing.

We continued developing our reading skills with Little Learners Love Literacy decodable books, focusing on blending sounds smoothly and building fluency. Students have also been working on their comprehension by discussing what they have read and making connections to their own experiences.

Maths

Our maths focus has been on comparing numbers and developing an understanding of one more and one less. Students have been using concrete materials, such as counters and number lines, to explore these concepts and strengthen their number sense.

Harmony Day

To celebrate Harmony Day, we read the book Welcome to Our World by Moira Butterfield and Harriet Lynas. This wonderful book helped us explore the ways children around the world live their daily lives.

Students shared and discussed similarities and differences between themselves and others—whether it’s what we eat, what we wear, how we get to school, or what we drink. It was a fantastic opportunity to build cultural awareness and appreciation for diversity within our classroom.

We also reflected on the importance of inclusivity and kindness and how we can make everyone feel welcome, just as the book teaches. It was wonderful to see the students so engaged and respectful during our discussions, truly embracing the message of Harmony Day.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Yesterday, students received their Premier’s Reading Challenge login details, which have been glued into the back of their homework books along with their Reading Eggs and Mathletics logins.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a fantastic initiative that encourages students to develop a love of reading by setting a goal to read a certain number of books throughout the year. Students can read books from home, school, or the local library and log their progress online. We encourage families to support their children in this challenge by reading together at home and discussing the stories they enjoy.

House Cross Country

A reminder that House Cross Country is tomorrow! Students are encouraged to wear their house colour to show their team spirit.

To help make the day easier, we recommend students pack a smaller bag with just the essentials—lunch, a snack, and a water bottle—as we will be walking to Elgar Park for the event.

We look forward to a fun-filled day of participation and cheering on our house teams!

Reminders

  • House Cross Country – Tomorrow! Wear house colours and pack a small bag.

  • Check homework books for Premier’s Reading Challenge login details.

Thank you for your ongoing support!
