Year 5

Term 2, 2025

Term 1 Review

After settling into our new classrooms and meeting our classmates, came the most important part of the school year: Learning. Here are some of the things we did in Term 1!

In reading, we made bloom balls. Bloom balls are hanging balls explaining some things about a book, like character traits, setting, problem, solution, etc. Everyone chose unique books, and it is very intriguing to observe the bloom balls.

In geography, we made posters about an optional country celebration ( Holi, Christmas, Valentines etc). We researched a lot about the origins of the celebration, what they do in the celebration, how the celebration started, and much, much more! Furthermore, we made posters on countries (different ones). We made them on Canva, and the teacher printed them out. It did take a while to research though. The information on those posters were religion, population, money currency, president, climate, building/ place to make the country stand out. They were extremely fun to make and everyone was satisfied with their result!

To be fair, out of all of the things we did in term 1, Naplan was the most nerve wracking and

stressful. We had 4 tests: Reading, Writing, Language and Conventions, and Maths. It was dead silent in the classroom as everyone wanted to get an acceptable score.

Of course I can’t forget Gardening! If you didn’t know, we have a vegetable garden at the left corner at the end of our school! Every single class grew something, my class grew cucumbers. Every fortnight, we would go to the veggie garden, learn something new about gardening, and check our vegetables that we are growing. We would compare the height difference from last time with rulers, and we water them. We also pull out weeds so our cucumbers can grow in peace.

Term 2

5/6 CAMP - Alexandra Adventure Resort

The cabins were amazing. The mattresses were perfect for sleeping on. Don’t get me started on what was inside the cabins. It was truly amazing. We slept on bunk beds but from my experience they were very creaky. Some of us got our own fireplace or wardrobe, sometimes even a sink and mirror but all the cabins were amazing in general. We were all split into different groups. The Kookaburras Homestead, the Turtle Lakehouse, the Snake Valley Lodge, the Wallabies Manor and the Echidna Lodge. All of them were different with some being better than the others. All genders were split into different groups. It was also split by grades. I’d just like to say thank you to the teachers for helping host this wonderful experience.

Food for dinner on Monday, we had a truly delicious bolognese pasta with sauce, one of the best I’ve had for sure. On top of that, we were treated to some chocolate mousse for dessert, which was absolutely scrumptious! The second night for dinner was some tasty schnitzel with potatoes and vegetables including corn, carrot and green beans, which were amazing! After that heavenly meal, we were given a delightful vanilla sundae with the choice of any flavoured syrup on top. It was actually delightful to taste, slowly melting away on your tongue as you took a bite. Throughout the day we also had morning tea and afternoon tea, and we had many different cakes. At the end of day 1, we roasted marshmallows one by one, most of them being burnt but delicious by the end.

On camp we had some incredible activities to go in depth about, all of them would be near impossible, too. So, lets start with the highlights.

Zipline: The zipline was positioned over the camp lake going over an island and landing on a man made hill made out of hay. A favourite of all the kids was going upside down. This was possible due to flicking your legs up and balancing on the part connected to your harness.

High Ropes: The high ropes where a series of obstacles positioned over a hill you had to manoeuvre over a series of obstacles all connected to a steel cable.

Night walk: On the first night we went for a night walk around the campgrounds we stopped to do stargazing around halfway and ended the night by toasting marshmallows.

Movie: On the second night we all settled in the recreation room with sleeping bags and pillows we crusaded in hand. We all got comfy to watch the masterpiece of the Wild Robot.

Canoeing: We set off from the shore onto the camp's lake to learn canoeing. We all had a blast having splash fights. Some kids even jumped in at the end. The mud was so sticky that even some kids' shoes got stuck in the mud, but don't worry, all the shoes were recovered.

STEAM

This term, STEAM will be a major focus of classroom learning. Students will explore energy sources, specifically renewable energy, and delve into various advantages and disadvantages of different energy sources and the challenges these pose to our ever-changing world. The culmination of this learning will result in students applying their knowledge and skills to design and build aquatic transport that uses renewable energy sources. Through this unit, students will gain an understanding of the importance of sustainable energy and the impact it has on our environment. We look forward to the engaging and hands-on learning experiences that this unit will provide.

Numeracy

This term, our primary focus will be on developing a strong understanding of fractions. Students will explore fractions in a variety of contexts, deepening their knowledge of concepts such as equivalence, comparison, and operations with fractions. In addition, we will reinforce foundational skills in addition and subtraction, applying these operations to solve problems involving fractions and whole numbers. Throughout the term, students will engage in real-world applications, strengthening their numerical fluency, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. This program will support students in building confidence when working with fractions while continuing to sharpen their addition and subtraction skills.

Literacy

Throughout this term, our focus on Literacy will encompass a wide range of skills and concepts, including the exploration of narrative perspectives through our first mentor text, 'The Lost Thing'. Students will make connections between images and text, whilst building their background knowledge of the industrial revolution. In writing, there will be a continued emphasis on sentence fluency and paragraph structure as students develop their skills in writing non-fiction texts.
