Year 3 News

Harmony Week Activities

In Week 8, we celebrated Harmony Week, a special occasion that highlights the importance of diversity and brings together Australians from all walks of life. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to reflect on our unique backgrounds and experiences.

We had the pleasure of having Mrs Duffy-Fainu’u come in to speak about Neurodiversity. This was a very informative presentation, with the key takeaway being the importance of appreciating each other’s differences. We learned that everyone is unique and should always be accepted.

One of the activities the students participated in during Harmony Week was decorating an "Elmer the Patchwork Elephant" template. Each student was encouraged to make creative choices representing who they are and how they stand out. The Year 3 students showcased their creativity beautifully, with many incorporating their hobbies, interests, and messages of inclusivity and kindness into the patchwork. It was lovely to see their individuality shine through.

Mrs. Anderson will create a beautiful whole-school display featuring the students' Elmers, and we’re excited to see it come together!

Writing a Persuasive Letter on Continuing the Colour Run

In another engaging activity, the students were tasked with writing a persuasive letter to a local councillor in response to a nearby resident's complaint about the noise level of the Colour Run.

The students were asked to present three reasons to convince the council to allow the event to continue. They tackled the challenge with enthusiasm, and their passion for the Colour Run was evident in their writing. If we ever face any real complaints, the Year 3 students would certainly have no trouble persuading others to see their point of view!

Numeracy: Subtraction and Perimeter

In mathematics, we have started our unit on subtraction where we have been learning how to subtract numbers using a vertical strategy. Through interactive games like ‘Race to Zero’ and ‘Numberman’, and using MAB blocks for hands-on practice, the students have made impressive progress. They are confidently subtracting two- and three-digit numbers, even when regrouping/trading is involved.

We’ve also started learning about the perimeter of quadrilateral shapes. The Year 3 students enjoyed an activity where they drew their own shapes, measured each side, and calculated the perimeter. They did an impressive job applying what they learned!

Kindness Challenge

As a part of our unit of inquiry, we have recently introduced the Kindness Challenge. To kick it off, the students wrote down acts of kindness on small pieces of paper. These acts are designed to inspire others to demonstrate kindness in their daily lives.

Each day, we will choose one of the student-created challenges and aim to complete that act of kindness. An example of a challenge might be to “compliment a friend.” We are excited to watch our Kindness Wall come to life with ideas that anyone can incorporate into their day-to-day routine.

 Lunch Clubs 2025

In the past few weeks, we've kicked off our lunch clubs for Term 1, and the response has been fantastic! The students are absolutely thrilled, and the launch has been a great success. On Tuesdays, they’ve been enjoying creating Mandalas with Mrs. Levine and Mrs. Lawrence, while Fridays bring a wave of creativity at the Art and Craft Club with Mrs. Holmes.

A big thank you to the team of Year 6’s that organised and ran the activities for the Art and Craft Club. We’re excited for the upcoming lunch clubs in Term 2, including the much-anticipated Chess Club with Mr. Bray!

Term 1 Wrap-Up

As Term 1 ends, it's hard to believe how quickly the time has flown! It’s been an action-packed term, and we’re all looking forward to a well-deserved rest during the Easter break. We hope everyone enjoys the two-week holiday and returns refreshed for the exciting term ahead!
