Year 6 News

What an incredible term it has been! Over the past ten weeks, students have embraced new leadership opportunities, developed their inquiry skills, and grown socially.

Recently, our focus has been on creating a positive and supportive classroom environment. Together, we have established clear expectations—both in our approach to learning and in how we share and respect our spaces.

The Year 6 teachers would like to commend the students on a great start to the year and hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday!

Literacy

Year 6 students have been honing their comprehension skills through reading while enhancing their writing with the use of figurative language. They have been exploring creative ways to bring their ideas to life, making their writing more vivid and engaging.

Please enjoy some of the student's recount:

Over the past few weeks in Grade 6 we’ve started new literacy lessons called ‘Book Club’. In each class we are reading a different novel. 6A is reading ‘Outer Face’, 6B is reading ‘Boy Overboard’, and 6C is reading ‘Out of My Mind’. In each group we study and read the book and answer questions based on the previous chapters we’ve read.

As a focus for writing, we are trying to improve our skills by including figurative language such as similes.

And finally, we have now finished our learning task on pervasive writing. We had to choose a topic that we were passionate about.

Mathematics

During our maths lessons, the Year 6 students have been diving into the world of graphing and data collection. Using Microsoft Excel, they have developed new skills in organizing and analysing data while gaining confidence with digital tools.

Here are some comments from our students:

Over the past couple of weeks, we have learnt many different complex strategies to workout maths. We have also done lots of work with data and graphs. We have learnt the different types of graphs like bar graph, line graph and picture graph! We also did some work on subtracting decimals and adding them. We have enjoyed these past weeks.

 PYP

We have moved onto our next unit of inquiry with the transdisciplinary theme Where we are in place and time, exploring past events and cultures that have helped influence and shape us today. Students have been diving into thought-provoking discussions on:

  • Events leading to Australia’s involvement in war since Federation

  • The changing face of Australian society throughout the 20th Century

  • Migration

  • The contribution of individuals and groups to the development of Australian society

Through these experiences, students are gaining a deeper understanding of past cultures and exploring the valuable lessons history has to offer.

The Shrine of Remembrance Excursion

The Year 6 teachers are incredibly proud of the students for the way they represented BNPS during our visit to the Shrine of Remembrance on Wednesday. Their respect and engagement were commendable.

Please enjoy some reflections and recounts from our students about this meaningful experience:

On the 26th of March the year sixes went to the Shrine of remembrance. We went to the crypt, Eternal flame, sanctuary, foot hill and we got to try on uniform e.g. hats, special cots and bags that were used in the war. On our first activities we went into the red room which we watch a film about the shrine and how it was made and why, it was also based on the war and the soldier how fort in the 1st and 2nd world war. We all so went to a room with lots of colours [flags] and in the middle of the room there was a statue of two men a father and son.

  • Isla

Our first stop was the mini movie which was about how the Shrine was built and how it was dedicated to the soldiers who fought in the first and second world war.

Our second activity was trying on what the nurses and the veterans wore in the war we also got to try the costumes in and get pictures take of us. The clothes were super cool and the nurse's outfits were very pretty. My favourite of what the veterans wore was their hat.

Our third rotation that we went to was the room of what the people who rode horses to the war and left them because they couldn’t take them to war. We got to try their whole uniform on, and it was so heavy.

After a long bus trip we finally arrived and had a bit of food. Once we finished we walked over to the internal flame and took a few pictures as a year level. After that, we split up into classes and went to our different spots.

My favourite spot was the life boat because it was cool how the army that fought for our country was paddling in that boat to save all of us.

  • Lottie

My favourite stop at the shrine was looking and learning about the 2end last lifeboat in World War 1. Did you know that about 180 horses went to World War 1 and only 1 horse came back. On one stop we got to try on the old uniforms that solders and nurses wore in the olden day's wars. They are very different to the uniforms today.

The Colour Run

On Tuesday the 25th of march all of the grades did a super fun colour run. We all fundraised money to resurface the top basketball court. During the colour run we went through a bunch of obstacles tall and small, we had to crawl through an inflatable Monty who is the mascot of the company.

The then parents got to spray us all with slime and coloured magic dust clouds. After the parents sprayed us, we got into a pit full of slime. We all had a photo taken by teachers on the amphitheatre while covered in slime.

We then all sat down while and the people who raised the most money got to slime about 10 teachers with buckets of slime. All teachers got slimed by 2 people and when finished were drenched in slime. we all laughed excitement and joy as the day ended and we all had fun.

Every grade except preps and year ones ran 2 laps around the oval there was bubbles, chalk, water and lots of slime.

The teachers would call up 1 year level at a time it was preps all the way to year sixes I had a really good time and tried to make the most of it since it was the last time I was going to get to do it.
