ICT Policies & Smart Devices

Many children wear digital devices such as fit-bits, Garmins and Apple watches to school, but it is concerning that many of these devices also have video and audio recording capability. This can lead to privacy issues in the classroom and the playground where people may be recorded without their knowledge or permission. Smart watches with connectivity can also lead to student distraction and potential bullying issues. The Department of Education & Training policies around wearable digital devices states that:

“if they (wearable devices) are brought to school, students must switch off all notifications during the school day.”

Please remind your students of the following:

  • Turn off all notifications during the school day - show them how if necessary.
  • Do not take video or audio recordings of anyone at school.
  • Do not make phone calls on smart watches during the school day.

Remember, if you need to contact your child while at school, please call the office, not the child.

Thank you for assisting us in the challenge of managing digital behaviours in the 21st century.
