Infant Indonesian
Prep students have been learning the Indonesian words for colours. Later this term they will be using these words to perform a short play: Di mana domba hijau? (Where is the green sheep?) Have a look at this video of the prep class singing the “Pelangi” (rainbow) song.
The Year 1 Indonesian class have been practising using Indonesian to give information about themselves. They are also very clever at remembering the Indonesian words for different body parts.
Year 2 have been learning the Indonesian words: kancil (mousedeer), buaya (crocodile), sungai (river) and hutan (jungle), in preparation for a puppet play they will be performing later in the term.

Year 4 Indonesian
Year 4 Indonesian students have been learning phrases to describe feelings and emotions, for example: Saya merasa capai (I feel tired). Maria has recently joined our class and she is teaching a number of students her native language as she is from Brazil. We have very pandai (clever) students!

Did you know that literacy and numeracy skills are taught in both the Indonesian and Japanese classes on a regular basis.
Year 11 Japanese students were introduced last week to the usage of the Japanese Soroban, (abacus), in which they learnt how to use to complete basic mathematical additions. They have been focusing on counting larger Japanese numbers and made the discovery that the Soroban is still highly used in Japan today, in fact there are annual competitions amongst high school students competing against each other to determine the Soroban champion.
Our Year 10 Japanese class theme this term has been about food. So far, the class have tasted Japanese green tea, whilst enjoying Mochi and Senbei (Japanese rice crackers), as well as learning about the Japanese tea ceremony. Near the end of the unit, they will have the opportunity to pack their own Obento box.
On Saturday, several students studying Japanese from Years 9 through to Year 11, who will be travelling to Japan in July this year, used the opportunity to host a BBQ to help raise funds for the trip. Thankfully the weather was good, and the group managed to sell many sausages to the community members coming into the school to vote.
