Fluency Games

Learning Intention: To develop number sense through fluency games, by being able to choose the most appropriate method for the task at hand and then be able to apply the skill to multiple contexts.

What are fluency games:

Fluency games give students opportunities to explore fundamental number concepts, such as the counting sequence, one-to-one correspondence, and computation strategies. These mathematical games can also encourage students to explore number combinations, place value, patterns, and other important mathematical concepts that can then be transferred to tasks.

Using simple, yet well designed fluency games, allow the learner to experience, make connections, practice and apply a particular skill or understanding to a mathematical problem, equation or scenario.

Here are some examples of Fluency Games the students have used in class:

  • Place Value towers
  • Addition and Subtraction ‘Tug of War’
  • Dotty 6’s

You can find instructions on how to play the games here

What you can do at home to continue this learning experience:

  • Have your child/ren teach you the games.
  • Encourage conversation about numbers, addition and subtraction strategies.
  • Ask questions about the choices your child/ren is making during the game.
  • Explain your choices throughout the game.
