Number & Algebra and Number and Place Value

Learning Intention: To represent a number in different forms.

Learning experience overview:

As a part of our current unit on Representing Number, we have been exploring different ways to show the value of 3 and 4 digit numbers. Each student rolled dice to create their own number, either 3 or 4 digits, depending upon what they felt comfortable working on.  They then used the Think Board, above, to demonstrate their understanding by representing their number in words, on a Place Value Chart, in Expanded Form and with Base-10 materials (MAB).  They were asked to demonstrate their understanding of the value of their number in terms of numbers that came before/after, 10 less/more, and 100 less/more.

Prompts/questions/responses:

  • Can you show me another way to make that number?
  • What would your number be if it was 5 less/5 more?
  • Could you make a counting pattern with your number?
  • What other numbers could we make with those digits?
  • Which number would be the highest/lowest in value?
  • Could you put those numbers in order from lowest value to highest value?
  • What would be different about each of them?
  • Choose one of those new numbers. How could you show it using expanded form?
  • What would it look like if you built the number with MAB (Base 10 materials)?
  • Could you count back/forwards from your number, in tens/hundreds? What pattern do you see?

What you can do now, to continue the learning at home from this experience:

  • Count forwards and backwards from any given number.
  • Count on from that number in tens or hundreds.
  • Continue to encourage your child to recognise and use numbers in everyday life.  You could use house/shop numbers or number plates to identify odd or even numbers or count on in tens.
  • Create new 3 or 4 digit numbers from a phone number and write them down in order from smallest to largest.
  • Practise identifying the values in a number – what is the value of the hundreds/tens/ones?
