Learning Intention: To use counting strategies to help us match the number to its amount.

Learning Experience Overview:

In Maths, students have been developing their counting and number sense. During this learning experience, they were exploring this concept through a measurement lens.

Launch:

We began the lesson by putting students into groups of 3-5. Students then ordered themselves from shortest to tallest within their group. As a class, we discussed the strategies used to measure accurately in order to help us order everyone from shortest to tallest.

Explore:

After the launch, students rolled a dice and had to identify the number on the dice. Then they had to collect the amount of items that matched the number on the dice. Once students had collected their specific amount of items, they then needed to order their items from shortest to tallest. Students recorded their items in their Maths book in order from shortest to tallest. They had to explain what counting strategy they used when collecting their items, as well as the strategies that enabled them to compare and order their items.

Enabling:

Students used smaller numbers such as 2 and 3.

Extending:

Students used higher numbers such as 5 and 6.

Summarising:

During this lesson, students discussed:

  • Counting the dots on their dice.
  • Matching the number to the amount.
  • The different counting strategies they used when collecting their items.
  • Which counting strategy worked best.
  • How to measure and compare the heights between multiple objects

Anchor Charts:

In this learning experience, students are learning to:

  • Counting one to one.
  • Using different counting strategies.
  • Comparing the length between multiple objects and ordering them from shortest to tallest.
  • Using anchor charts to support their learning.

Examples of students’ work:

What can you do now to continue the learning at home from this experience:

  • Use different counting strategies when collecting and counting objects.
  • Complete the same activity at home: roll a dice and collect that many objects. Then order those objects from shortest to tallest.
  • Order members of your family from shortest to tallest.
  • Practice using the vocabulary shortest, tallest, shorter than, taller than
  • Compare your child’s height to different objects; find objects that they are taller than, and things they are shorter than.
