Performing Arts in Term 4
It always surprises me how busy the Performing Arts department have been between each newsletter. There are always rehearsals in the dance studio, Blackbox theatre or the band room. Lunchtimes are never quiet and bring the active sounds of rehearsals, practice and auditions.
This term has been as busy as ever!
The search for clues to discover the next musical production was certainly fun – and lead to the news that ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ would be the next Patterson River Secondary College show. Auditions have been running non-stop!
The Blackbox Theatre welcomed parents and friends for its inaugural performance. A student lead performance of “Tales of Oz” was presented by the Year 8 elective ‘Showtime’.
The new outdoor performance space became a focus of the term. A Junior Celebration concert welcomed parents and friends for the end of year performances of the Year 7 Concert Band, Dance extension and the Year 8 Concert Band.
A lunchtime concert featuring the Stage Band and girl rock band ‘Miss Communication’ officially opened the new outdoor performance space. How enjoyable it was to relax in the sunshine with the school community and great music.
This week the Choir performed at Bayside Shopping Centre, bringing Christmas cheer to all.

Celebration Performance – On the new Outdoor Stage!
On Monday 18th November we celebrated our final performances as the Year 8 Band. We were joined with the Year 7 Band and Dance extension.
We spent the morning rehearsing on the stage at the front of the school – which was certainly a challenge as it started to rain! We braved out the rain – despite our music and instruments getting wet.
Luckily the weather cleared in time for our performance. Our parents and friends arrived at the end of lunchtime, being the first guests in this performance space. The area filled quickly, ready for the start of our celebration concert.
The Year 7 Band started the concert with 3 numbers they had been practising. They set the tone for a fun performance.
The next item was the Dance Extension – this is made up of Year 7 and Year 8 students. They brought some sparkle to the stage with their performance of the ‘Spice Girls Medley’ and ‘Deck the rooftops’ from Glee. I wonder if Santa heard this call to visit.
Next it was our turn – the Year 8 Concert Band. We played ‘Eye of the Tiger’, ‘Funky Town’ and “Jingle Bell Rock”. We had been practising these new pieces in our music class.
Being outside was a new experience as we had to contend with the wind blowing our music and the sun glare.
Our performance of “Jingle Bell Rock” must have been great as Santa came to visit! It was so much fun having Santa join our concert!
Thank you to all the performers and teachers as it was a fun way to finish our time as the Year 8 concert band.

Showtime – The Tales of Oz
This year, one of the options for a drama elective in Year 8 was ‘Showtime’. It required us to script-edit, direct, choreograph, block and perform our own show for our CAT. We also had to find and/or create our own costumes, sets and props. As a group, we decided to perform an adaptation of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ which we titled ‘The Tales of Oz’. This elective allowed us to work as a team collaboratively and creatively to put together and perform a show in front of a live audience. We worked with people from different classes which formed new bonds and friendships with our classmates. Showtime built up our confidence, taught us new theatre skills and taught us how to efficiently manage our time and just how much effort it takes to put on a show. Congratulations to all the cast and crew! It was a lot of work, but everyone put in so much effort to produce a successful show.
