Hello families and friends!
As we say hello to December, we have begun to reflect on the fun times we have had this year. We look forward to spending our last weeks together in Year 3!
Here is an update on what we have been doing in the Year 3 area:
Reading and Writing
We have been enjoying our study of the film “Toy Story 4”. We have been analysing the events, mood and music of the film.
As part of our study, we created a storyboard of the main events of the film.
We put our summarising skills into action as we recorded events that were interesting or important. We had to make a quick sketch and summarise whilst we watched the film!
We have explored the fantasy genre and have been busy writing our own fantasy story inspired by the idea of “The Magic Tree”
We are ensuring our fantasy story has features such as:
Mathematics
We have continued practising our computational skills involving all four of the operations. We have enjoyed the challenge! We have used the vertical algorithm and we have explored worded problems.
Look at some of our work:
We have also been completing some important end of year assessments such as PAT Maths and Essential Assessments. Students have given their BEST effort!
Science
We were very interested to learn about the way scientists classify animals using a branching diagram. We have learnt new vocabulary such as vertebrate and invertebrate, arachnid, mammal, amphibian and many more!
Concert Practise:
Here we are learning the dance routine for our end of year concert performance. The students have helped one another learn and practise!
See you at the concert!
We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

As we get closer to the end of year 4 we have been extra busy with camp, Christmas concert practice and finishing off our amazing work! It has been an amazing year so far, but we are definitely ready for the holidays!
Year 4 Golden Valleys Camp – During week 6 the year 4s were off to the Morning Peninsula for their camp. The wet weather did not squish our excitement on the first day!
We completed many different activities such as the giant swing, nature walks, zip lines, archery, damper making, Ga Ga ball, hut building and so much more! It was a jam packed 3 days but we had the most fun of all!
Thank you to all of our teachers that came with us on camp!
In reading and writing we have been completing a film study on Inside Out. We have been looking at the characters, inferring, making connections and the character traits. We were also able to create out own inside out character and write a descriptive paragraph using our knowledge of writing.
Science has been the best fun of all! We have been focusing on chemical reactions and completing many different experiments that helped our understanding. We have made oobleck, elephant toothpaste, lemon volcano, slime and playdough! We loved getting our hands dirty and experimenting with the different ingredients to find the chemical reactions that was happening.

As the school years draws closer to its end, the year 5 students continue to wrap up their final pieces of work for the year.
In Writing, students have completed their own film review on the film Luca. The students have been able to incorporate all the elements of a film review into their final publish piece. Students have been able to create their own rating system and provide recommendations for the films using evidence from the film to support their opinions.
In our Maths units, students have been conducting different types of chance experiments and using the vocabulary to describe the probability of different outcomes. Students have also used their knowledge that they gained from our fractions, decimals and percentages units earlier this year to be able to accurately identify the likelihood of events occurring. In our number and algebra unit, students have revised the four mathematical processes (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Students have learned how to solve mathematical problems involving multiple processes by using the BODMAS method. Students have also been solving equations involving algebra.
In Science, to wrap up our animal adaptations unit, students have chosen an animal of their choice and focused on its adaptations. Students explained how the animal’s adaptations help it to survive in its habitat while also looking at why these adaptations wont be helpful in different environments.
Finally, in week 6, student participated in our Leadership Day. Students started the day by discussing traits that are an essential part of leadership. Students then participated in activities that focused on using leadership traits such as communication, trust, and teamwork. Students then prepared for the afternoon activity by creating team. In their teams, they came up with a team name and created their own team flag including mascots. For the afternoon, students participated in an Amazing Race style game where they needed to race around the school in their teams solving multiple puzzles and activities to receive answers to their answer sheets. All the students had a great time during this event with the “Oompa – Loompa” team get all the answers correct and winning the event. To wrap up the day, students had guest speaker Hannah MacDougal speak to them about her life. Hannah spoke about all the resilience and determination she has shown in her life to become a Paralympian.
In all, the year 5’s have had an amazing year and are all looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead next year in year 6.
Kind regards,

This term was really amazing! Some Grade 6s’ went on the Canberra camp and it was really fun and educational. Some places we went to include the Australian Institute of Sport, the new and old Parliament House, the High Court and the War Memorial. Our personal favourite was Questacon because there were so many interactive and fun activities to do, all while learning a lot of cool facts and interesting information.
In our lesson subjects what have we been learning?
Well, in Maths, we learnt about all things financial, but now we have started to learn about Algebra and Chance/Probability.
In Reading, we have been doing a film study for the movie The Greatest Showman where we are looking at the characters, scenes and inferring meaning behind the song lyrics. We have also been reading “Then” the sequel to “Once” by Morris Gleitzman.
In Writing, we learnt about persuasive texts, and we wrote our own. We wrote multiple and published our favourite.
In Humanities we are making an advertisement for an innovative product. We have all come up with some really amazing new ideas! Lastly, in Science we did an experiment to see what does or doesn’t form a solution and we also investigated Solids, Liquids and Gases.
We can’t believe this year is almost over! We are feeling nervous and excited about high school but we are definitely excited for our excursion to Go Climb & our Graduation that is coming up soon!
"In Year 6 we are cool because we thrive at school."
