PREP

We have been very busy with our learning in Grade Prep for the last few weeks! We have continued to learn about Sharing, Mass and Capacity in maths. We have continued to share collections into equal groups and explain our thinking when sharing. We have attached some pictures below of our sharing. We have also been measuring the capacity of different containers. In Reading, we have been reading a range of fiction books and have been practising all of the comprehension skills we have learnt this year. In writing, we have been focusing on writing letters which include a message to someone. We are also learning how to begin a letter and sign a letter, as well as writing down the sounds that we can hear in words and using punctuation. In Week 8, we also went to the SWPBS shop where we spent our Brookside Bucks that we have earnt by receiving our 4R Superstar awards. We have had an amazing term in Grade Prep filled with many memories and learning. The Preps are looking forward to finishing the year with our Prep Celebration at the movies. We have also been practicing our singing and dancing for our end of year concert, which we are very excited for!

The Prep Teachers would also like to express their thanks to all of the Prep students and families this year. It has been a great first year of schooling for the Preps, filled with lots of learning and fun.

The Prep Team

Year 1

Over the past few weeks, Year 1 students have been exploring procedural texts in reading and writing. They’ve been learning to sequence events in a procedural text and write steps for a procedural text using language such as first, next, then and, finally.

To support their procedural writing, students have engaged in language experiences such as playing games and drawing pictures, then using these tasks to help them create procedural texts by recounting the steps from these activities.

In Math, we’ve been learning about capacity. Using hands-on materials like different sized containers, water, Unifix cubes and counters, students have been comparing the capacity of various containers and ordering them from largest to smallest. We have explored the meaning of language such as full, empty, nearly full, half full and holds more or holds less.

Week 7 brought the Grade 1 Stay Late! Students had a ball eating snacks, watching a very funny magician perform, some lucky students even got to be part of the show! They ate pizza and finished up the evening with a disco.

We’re all looking forward to our “Christmas Concert” event next week and have been practicing our songs and dances to put on an epic performance for our families. We can’t wait to see everyone there on Monday the 9th of December! We will also have our grade 1 end of year celebration on Friday 13th at Funtastic Play Centre, how exciting!

Year 2

Term 4 has been a busy and exciting time for our Year 2 students, filled with growth, learning, and creativity. As we prepare for the end of year celebrations, it’s amazing to look back at photos from the first day of school and see how much the students have grown—not just in height but also in confidence and skills.

Literacy Adventures

In Writing and Reading, students have been exploring instructional texts and procedures. They’ve learned about the structure of these texts, the specific language used, and the importance of transitional words. As part of this learning, they followed instructions to make fairy bread and slime, which were both fun and educational experiences.

In our storybook lessons, we’ve been reading George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. The students have been examining the unique vocabulary in the book, predicting story outcomes, summarising key events, and making meaningful connections. This novel has introduced them to language and concepts beyond everyday conversations, enriching their literacy skills.

Over the holidays, we encourage families to continue reading with their children and to listen to them read. Starting a writing diary can also be a wonderful way to help them practice their literacy skills further.

Numeracy Focus

Recently in Numeracy, Year 2 students have been working on measurement, multiplication, and division. Next, we’ll dive into learning about money and its operations, which will build essential life skills while keeping learning practical and engaging.

Humanities Highlights

In Respectful Relationships, we’ve been wrapping up our unit on emotions and communication. Students have been learning about verbal and non-verbal communication, understanding emotions, and developing empathy by exploring how to approach and support others.

In Humanities we’ve also been working on a creative project—designing robots to help with daily life. The unit concluded with students building their own robots. Although it was messy, the excitement and hands-on learning made it all worthwhile!

Science Discoveries

In Science, students have explored the fascinating changes humans experience as they grow. They’ve also been studying metamorphosis, learning about the dramatic transformations some creatures go through during their lifecycles.

Excursion to LEGO Land  - This Friday, the Year 2 students will be heading to LEGO Land, an excursion they’ve eagerly anticipated for weeks. It promises to be a fun-filled day of exploration and creativity.

Looking Ahead to Year 3- The Year 2 students are excited to meet their new teachers for next year and hear about the exciting activities planned for Year 3. This is an exciting time, and we know they will continue to thrive as they move forward.

Thank You- On behalf of the Year 2 Team, we want to thank all our students and families for their support throughout the year. We will miss our students but are so proud of their growth and achievements. We can’t wait to see their smiling faces as they continue their journey through the school.

Warm regards,

Yr 2 Team
