Student Voice: Reviewing the School Uniform Policy

Recently, students in the Grade 5/6 area had the opportunity to read and discuss the school’s uniform policy as a class. This was a valuable learning experience, allowing students to understand the expectations, ask questions for clarification, and share their thoughts on the policy. Students added their insights, questions and suggestions for consideration to their classroom parking lot;  which will be discussed at the next Junior School Council meeting, where they will be further discussed before being presented to Mrs. Crane. 

 

This process encouraged critical thinking, respectful discussion, and active participation in school decision-making. It was also a great way for students to develop their understanding of school policies and appreciate the importance of a uniform in promoting a sense of belonging and school pride. The discussions helped them recognise different perspectives and understand the reasons behind the rules.

 

We are proud of how thoughtfully and respectfully our students engaged with this process, and we appreciate their contributions. Their feedback will help shape future conversations about the uniform policy, ensuring that all students feel heard and valued.

 


Make Me a Radical Robot! 🤖

 

Our students have been unleashing their creativity and applying their mathematical skills in an exciting 3D Objects Maths Investigation—the "Make Me a Radical Robot!" competition. This hands-on challenge encouraged students to explore the practical applications of geometry while designing and building their very own toy robot.

 

✨ Bringing Maths to Life!

Mathematical investigations like this help students see that there can be many different approaches, solutions, and outcomes to a problem. When connected to the real world, they make learning more meaningful and engaging. Open-ended tasks also allow students to work at their own level, building confidence and a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

✨ The Challenge

As part of their learning on 3D objects, students took on the role of toy designers for Tommy’s Toy Treasure Trove. Tommy, a toy shop owner, was searching for a fresh and exciting robot design to bring to life in his factory. Our students eagerly accepted the challenge!

 

To complete the competition, students worked through several key tasks:

2D Design: They created labelled, to-scale diagrams showcasing their robot’s features.

Materials Matrix: They identified and explained which materials would be best suited for each part of their robot.

3D Model: They built colourful and creative 3D models of their robots using a range of materials.

Persuasive Poster: They designed eye-catching posters to convince parents to buy their toy robots!

✨ Design Requirements

Students needed to apply their knowledge of 3D objects while following specific design guidelines:

📏 Robots could be no taller than 30cm.

🔺🔷 Each design had to include prisms, pyramids, and at least five different 3D objects.

 

Students looking for an extra challenge extended their learning by incorporating sophisticated 3D objects such as cones, cylinders, and tetrahedrons into their designs. Some even went a step further, using technology to create television commercials advertising their robots!

✨ A Fun and Engaging Learning Experience

Throughout the project, teachers provided guidance and support, ensuring that every student felt confident and engaged. It was wonderful to see students collaborating, experimenting with different materials, and bringing their creative visions to life.

 

This investigation helped students see the real-world relevance of mathematics, demonstrating that learning about shapes and structures goes beyond the classroom. We are so proud of our young inventors and their amazing robot creations! 🎉 A big congratulations to all students for their enthusiasm, effort, and fantastic designs!
