NAPLAN and beyond: Supporting every student to achieve their personal best
Each year, the publication of NAPLAN results sparks widespread media commentary, often focused on declining standards or national concerns about literacy and numeracy. This year was no exception.
However, these headlines rarely tell the full story. At Kilvington, we view NAPLAN as one useful piece in a much larger puzzle that helps teachers and families understand how students are progressing, and where they may benefit from further support or challenge.
KILVINGTON'S NAPLAN RESULTS
In 2023, NAPLAN moved to an online adaptive format, where students complete digital tests in Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy. Results are reported against four proficiency standards: Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs Additional Support.
We are incredibly proud of our students’ performance in the 2025 assessments. Across all tests and year levels, 95.4% of Kilvington students achieved either Strong or Exceeding.
This outstanding result reflects the dedication of our students, the skill of our teachers, and the strong culture of learning across the School. Congratulations to all Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students on this exceptional achievement.
HOW WE USE NAPLAN DATA
At Kilvington, NAPLAN is not viewed in isolation. It provides a snapshot of student learning on a single day and must be considered alongside a broader range of evidence.
Teachers use NAPLAN results in combination with classroom-based assessments, observations, wellbeing insights, and conversations with students to form a more complete picture of individual learning needs.
Importantly, NAPLAN helps identify both students who may require additional support and those who are ready for further challenge. Teachers also analyse patterns in the data to inform curriculum design, ensuring that we continue to meet the evolving needs of our learners.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress or their NAPLAN data, we encourage you to reach out to their Mentor or Classroom Teacher.
HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD TO SUCCEED?While NAPLAN offers insight into academic achievement, long-term success is built on strong, sustainable learning habits.
As we move through Term 3, it’s a timely opportunity to review the daily routines that help students become confident, independent learners.
At Kilvington, we explicitly teach six key study habits that support learning across all subjects:
- Consistency: Regular 30–40 minute sessions are far more effective than last-minute cramming.
- Planning: A balanced study schedule that includes time for rest, extracurricular activities and revision is essential.
- Summarising: Writing notes, summary pages or cue cards in their own words helps students consolidate learning.
- Study environment: A quiet, dedicated workspace supports focus and productivity.
- Minimising distractions: Encourage device-free study time to maintain concentration.
- Purposeful study: Use checklists and KCEE pages to guide what and how to study.
Families can offer support by reinforcing these routines, encouraging healthy sleep and wellbeing habits, as well as praising effort, persistence and problem-solving, not just achievement.
We’re incredibly proud of the progress our students are making and the learning culture they continue to shape. Let’s continue working together to build confident, capable learners who are ready to take on new challenges, both in the classroom and beyond.
