Around the Secondary Classes
Year 7 English
In Year 7, our last unit studied for the year in English was focused on the different types of animation techniques used in short films and movies and how visual literacy techniques create meaning. We specifically looked at author, illustrator and short-film producer Shaun Tan and his book and short film called ‘The Lost Thing’.
We studied all the various camera angles used in movies and films, the salient features used in cinema, and juxtaposition, for example, dystopia vs utopia.
We then took all that we had learnt in English and applied it to our unit on Advent in Theology and Spirituality. We took the themes of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love and set about creating a short animation about one of these themes. We used a storyboard template to plan our animation, considering the characters, the setting, the events, the colour symbolism, the sound, the camera angles and the chosen materials.
Our stop-motion animations all followed the structure of a narrative - orientation, complication, climax and resolution - and the results were worthy of an Oscar Award!

Music Ensembles Afternoon
Recently, our annual end-of-year celebration of the Music ensembles occurred in the Hall. The Middle Years Voices, Senior Singers, Pizzicato Players, Fiddlesticks, Ceilidh Band, Trumpeteers and the College Orchestra all performed for an appreciative audience of family and friends. Special presentations were made to the Year 10 students for whom that was their final performance with a College ensemble. All students did themselves proud with their preparation and performances on the day. Special thanks to Anita Cairns, Anita Schleebs, Natalya Morales, Luke Plumb, Sylvie Carolin-Unkovic, Esther Colbourn and Henry Gell for their assistance with the ensembles once again this year.

Dance News
The Year 9/10 Dance Elective class for 2025 spent some time getting to know each other last week by participating in contemporary dance workshops run by Sydney Dance Company.
The students participated in two virtual workshops with artists from Sydney Dance Company, both exploring contemporary dance technique. They had a great time engaging with both Millie and Siobhan, learning different ways of moving the body through the space doing spinal articulation, turns and travelling from the corner.
The Sydney Dance Company artists then taught the girls some repertoire from the company’s highly acclaimed show Forever and Ever. It was a really wonderful way to finish a great year of Dance at Mount Carmel. Bring on 2025 and more exciting dance adventures!

STRIVE
Our Year 8 STRIVE program concluded for 2024 on Friday 29 November, with the annual trek from Mount Carmel College to the summit of kunanyi/Mount Wellington.
Students began with high spirits, tackling what many initially deemed an impossible task. In a wonderful outcome, over 60 Year 8 students completed the walk, showcasing their perseverance, resilience, and growth. Most importantly, the support they showed for one another made reaching the summit a powerful reminder of what can be achieved together.
This walk, a fitting finale for the STRIVE program, leaves our Year 8 students inspired to face and overcome future challenges with confidence and unity.
