Fixtures 11 November

Basketball

This week saw some strong results in the As and Es against St Pats and the Cs and Ds against Oakhill, with only 1 team in each division recording a loss.

The F teams recorded some close games but were unlucky against Oxley College at their home ground.

The B teams had very mixed results with good wins to the 14Bs and 17Bs against Stannies.

The 1st V had a nail-biting finish against Pats, holding off a late comeback to win by just 2 points. Aidan McNeilly (18 points) delivered some timely baskets in the second half and Flynn Pavely (17 points) threw down some thunderous dunks in traffic, leading our scorers for the day. Some notable contributions also from Max Wilcox and Nick Stepanian who each contributed 14 points to the tally. The team looks to extend their winning streak to 3 this weekend against a talented central coast team.

Hat-trick! Congratulations to Oliver Costain (U17 Purple) who took a hat-trick (three wickets on three consecutive balls) in 3 for 9 vs Peninsular.

ISA Round 3

1st XI v Central Coast Grammar School at East Gosford   1st XI 10/159 (Darcy Aylmer 45, Toby Moran 23, Ollie Freeman 23, Patrick Frost 19, Lachlan Jurcevic 18) defeated Central Coast Grammar 47 School (Jared Fernandes 5 for 4, Lucas Gleeson 4 for 23).Playing away on the Central Coast, captain Darcy Aylmer won the toss for the fourth time in a row and decided to bat first. After the loss of two early wickets, the captain and opener Toby Moran played with intent to put on an enterprising 65 run stand. With the change of a ball, both batsmen lost their wickets however Ollie Freeman batted confidently in partnership with Pat Frost. Lachlan Jurcevic hit strongly towards the end of the innings which concluded after 34 overs.

Tight bowling in the first spell leading up to drinks put the opposition behind the run rate. Darcy Aylmer’s ten consecutive overs maintained pressure as he conceded just three singles in his 60 balls. At 3 for 42 Central Coast were mounting a fightback but Jared Fernades bowled a devastating spell of 4.4 overs, taking five unassisted wickets (four bowled, one lbw). He showed the benefit of the simple method of bowling full and straight at the stumps. He was well supported by some clever left arm orthodox spin of Lucas Gleeson who deserved his four wickets. The team is commended for the way they bounced back from their previous disappointing performance.

2nd XI v Chevalier College at Oxford Falls #1         2nd XI 10/130 (Rohan Chang 26, Darcy Mills 25*, Max Lynn 17, Thomas Roche 17) defeated by Chevalier College 6/131 (Alex Burke 2 for 21, Rohan Chang 2 for 22, Max Lynn 1 for 23).   The 2nd XI won the toss and elected to bat on which looked like to be an excellent wicket against Chevalier College. However, after losing a wicket on the first ball of the innings things did not look good as wickets fell regularly. A lone hand from opener Rohan Chang (26) and some lower order hitting from Darcy Mills (25) managed to take the 2nd XI to 10/130 after a brief rain delay. Chevalier started off strong but a good spell from Alex Burke (2 for 21) brought the 2nd XI back into the game. Some good bowling from Rohan Chang (2 for 22) and a direct hit run-out from Darcy Mills wasn’t enough as Chevalier got over the line with 4 wickets to spare. The 2nd XI will be looking at the next game against St Patrick’s this Saturday.

Tennis

Players at the 10:00 am games were forced to run for cover several times with the rain. At midday, it was fortunate than only one match was unfinished as the skies opened with torrential rain.

This week, I had the pleasure of umpiring a Green Ball match and was impressed by the calibre of play and sportsmanship. Luca Helmich combined strategic thinking and skill in outmanoeuvring his opponents with some un-gettable ball placements. Nicholas Halim was competitive with his focus and agility enabling him to return every point. Javian Foo and Harry Wortley’s pluck and perseverance delivered both some satisfying winning shots.

With three rounds remaining, check out your place on the competition ladder to tap into your competitive spirit:

I am pleased to report that leading the Division One ladder is Boston Bannister (Year 8) and Jake Yu (Year 7) who have 14 out 15 possible points, losing only 1 set.
