2023 NSW Schools Constitutional Convention

On Friday 3 November, Year 11 student Chris Mander had the opportunity to attend the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention at NSW Parliament House, Macquarie Street, Sydney. To be eligible to attend the Convention, students across the State had to submit a 500-word statement in their own words to the following question; Do we need to revise how we go about constitutional change? Chris was fortunate enough to be chosen to attend the convention alongside other Legal Studies students from NSW. The convention seeks to promote understanding and informed discussion amongst young Australians about the Australian Constitution and system of government.

The day comprised of a keynote speaker including Professor Emerita Anne Twomey from the University of Sydney, as well as speakers in the Legislative Assembly. In addition, there were several workshops and group discussions on contemporary issues regarding Constitutional reform with parliamentary experts. Activities such as mock referendums and reports encouraged collaboration and research. At the end of the day, students then voted eligible candidates to be involved in the National Schools Constitutional Convention in March 2024 and Principals will be informed about this decision later this month. Overall, the day was a valuable experience to learn from different voices in the legal community and understand some of the nuanced debates that aim to improve our legal system.

Congratulations to Chris for being such a deserving representative for the College.
