CURRICULUM FOCUS

We are learning to use meditation as a strategy for being mindful

VOCABULARY

Meditation: a mental exercise that incorporates various techniques of concentration, contemplation, and abstraction.

Mindfulness: is about paying attention in a particular way – on purpose, in the present moment and without judgement.

Present moment: the period of time that is happening now.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Ask your child to try five finger breathing. This can be done anywhere and used as a strategy to bring our bodies back into the present moment in a calmer state.

Instructions:

Hold one hand in front of you, fingers spread. Now, slowly trace the outside of your hand with the index finger on your other hand, breathing in when you trace up a finger, and out when you trace down. Move up and down all five fingers. When you’ve traced your whole hand, reverse direction and do it again.
