Reading

CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in Reading we are learning to use dialogue to infer about the character’s feelings, actions and motives.

VOCABULARY

Character Actions: What a character has done.

Character Motives: Why they have done this.

Inferring: Using our prior knowledge and text clues to make an inference (conclude what has happened).

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Ask your child to read through the below extract from the text ‘Yard Sale’ by Eve Bunting and fill in the table for both characters.

ALMOST EVERYTHING WE OWN is spread out in our front yard. It is all for sale. We are moving to a small apartment.

I suddenly see a man loading my bike into the back of his truck. I rush over to him and grab one of the wheels.

“You can’t take this” I say, pulling on it. “It’s mine”

“Oh” the man looks surprised,  but he sets the bike out on the grass. “I’m sorry. I just bought it. Was it not supposed to be for sale?"
