Chess

An exciting end to the Chess year for our players with the State Finals played at Brighton Grammar.

After two rounds we were one of only three teams, along with Scotch College and Melbourne High, with a perfect score. Our top five boys were very keen to take out this tournament because the winners get to travel to Adelaide in January for the National Finals.

After five rounds we were equal second with Melbourne High just one point ahead in first place. By the time the last (8th round) came along, we had slipped to 3rd place but still in the hunt to take out the tournament because we were just 1.5 points behind the leaders.

Chess tournaments are designed so that the competition gets tougher for the top players and teams with each successive round. We were nevertheless still hopeful of results going our way in the last round but alas, it was not to be. We finished up a very creditable 4th overall, just 2 points behind the overall winners, Melbourne High. Waverley Christian College was second and Scotch College third.

Our team has come a long way in recent years, and we are now a force to be reckoned with in the toughest high school chess competition in Victoria, and if we believe the organisers, it is also the toughest state chess competition in the country.

Well done to all our players. Rey D was our best player on the day finishing with 6 points from 8 games.
