Promoting Responsible Online Behaviour
Dear Parents and Carers,
Recent world events have highlighted the importance of being thoughtful and vigilant about our online actions. In a world where information flows freely and swiftly, we must equip our school community with the skills and values necessary to navigate the digital landscape responsibly and provide guidance on how families and students can monitor and filter their online behaviour. By doing this, we can help our families and students avoid content that may be confronting or misleading.
Open and Informed Discussions: Encourage open and informed discussions with your child/ren about current events that occur. This can help them understand the context and develop a more empathetic perspective. Consider age-appropriate resources to facilitate these conversations.
Critical Thinking: Teach your child critical thinking skills, emphasising the importance of verifying information before accepting it as truth. Discuss the potential for misinformation.
Online Etiquette: Emphasise the significance of respectful and constructive online communication. Kindness and empathy are essential, especially when discussing sensitive topics.
Digital Literacy: Help your child/ren understand the digital tools and settings available to control their online experience. This includes privacy settings, content filtering, and tools to manage screen time.
Supervision and Monitoring: Keep a watchful eye on online activities, especially younger students. Engage in their online world and, where necessary, establish appropriate restrictions.
Reporting Mechanisms: Ensure your child knows how to report any inappropriate content to you or a trusted adult, or the site administrators and government agencies.
Resources and Support: If you have concerns about online behaviours or if they are struggling with the impact of global events, our school provides resources and support. Please reach out to us if you need assistance.
We believe that a strong partnership between school and home is crucial in nurturing responsible digital citizens. By promoting these principles, we can help our students become well-informed, empathetic, and responsible individuals in both their offline and online worlds.
Thank you for your continued support in our shared mission of fostering a safe and positive learning environment for our students.
Sincerely,
Mr Dean Owens
