School of Foundations

During Term 4, our students have the opportunity to consolidate their learning. This term, the teachers have organised units of work across a range of subject areas that are engaging and enable the students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills
The teachers are also continuing to teach and assess our students' capabilities through our six pillars of learning.

Early Stage One Net
EnglishKindergarten students have been working on writing Procedures to inform the reader on the steps to do certain tasks. We have read and written procedures about how to make a sandwich, how to make popcorn, how to brush your teeth and how to wash your hands. The students have been using sequencing words to make sure the steps are in order. Kindergarten have been working hard to use capital letters and full stops in their writing. Students have been identifying and using command verbs that tell the reader what to do in each step.
In Reading, Kindergarten have been looking closely at identifying nouns, adjectives and verbs in our shared reading of our big books. Students are gaining confidence in identifying these words in our reading and also are able to brainstorm different adjectives to describe the nouns in sentences.
In collaboration with the School of Entrepreneurs, we have commenced a Reading Initiative that supports our early readers. Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning, dedicated Year 9 and 10 students work alongside Kindergarten students providing them with valuable reading tools to support and extend their learning. There are many smiles during this time of the day!
MathematicsStudents have been deepening their understanding of numbers to 30 by working on number lines, bundling and representing their number in more than one way. This has led to students developing their understanding of number busting and how numbers can be shown as pictures, words, on number lines, as bundles and loose ones, on bead strings and as number sentences.
Religion
This term in Religious Education, students will be focusing on the driving question, How is God the father present to all in our world? Through the driving question, students will learn about God's continued presence in the world and how it is revealed in us. So far, students have been exploring how we are all unique yet we are all one family. This notion has been extended through recognising that God created us for a purpose because we are part of His family.
Geography
This term in Geography students are exploring places in Australia they have lived, discovered and belong to. By the end of the unit, students will develop an understanding of what makes a place special and how this may differ for other people. This week they will look at the importance of looking after sacred places such as Uluru, an indigenous landmark located in the heart of the red centre. As well as learning about Australia’s significant places, they will begin to investigate the location of places within and outside their community as well as built and natural environments.
Stage 1
Stage 1 has had a fantastic start to the term, exploring new inquiry questions based on what they know and what they need to know about different topics. Below is an outline of the amazing learning so far this term.
English
This term, in Writing, students have been exploring how to write a persuasive text. Students have selected a toy and are convincing their parents/carers about why they deserve this toy and what they will learn when using this toy. Students will be encouraged to use persuasive language such as high modality words, rhetorical questions and time connectives to help them convince their audience.
Religion
This term, Stage 1 have been learning about Sacred Scriptures. Students have had the opportunity to look through the Bible and learn about stories and teachings from the Bible as well as moral lessons and parables. The goal is to instil a sense of reverence and respect for Sacred Scriptures. Students have been particularly focusing on the story of David and Goliath to learn about the message of having faith in God. Through these teachings, students are introduced to moral values, empathy, and the teachings of Jesus, which form the bases of their character.
Mathematics
This term students are working on open ended questions exploring the area of different two dimensional space. They are investigating and comparing the area of different shapes using formal and informal units of measure. Students have been engaging in measuring the perimeter of these shapes and identifying how the area can measure the same but the perimeter changes.
Personal Development and Health (PDH)
This term in PDH, students have begun to explore their sense of self and the factors that contribute to and influence their identity. During Week’s 1 and 2, students have learnt what it means to be unique through discovery on gallery walks. Students looked at various pictures and discussed common themes that related to the driving question ‘How does my uniqueness shape who I am?’. We then worked as a group to unpack vocabulary within the driving question and how this relates to our context, in order for students to be able to access the question. In addition, we discussed what we already know about being unique and what we need to know in order to answer the question sufficiently.
