Student Voice : Springvale Campus
We can't believe this is the last term of Primary School! Term 4 has been OUTSTANDING so far, we are SMASHING and ACHIEVING success criteria’s and learning LOTS. This term is FLOODED with SPECIAL EVENTS and upcoming excursions. It is SO WONDERFUL to see everyone engaging with each other positively and making our school a fantastic, fun, and safe place to learn!! We will now be elaborating on some of our most memorable highlights of this term. Hope you enjoy reading about them as much as we enjoyed participating in them!
NGV (National Gallery of Victoria)
Not so long ago, the SLC students from both campuses went to the National Gallery of Victoria! They learnt about a famous artist called Pierre Bonnard and his unique art styles. Did you know that Pierre Bonnard's artworks are only located in France, so seeing it in the NGV would be a once in a lifetime opportunity? As well as looking at the different artworks, the students participated in an art workshop! They got to do art styles that have been experimented with by the man himself (Pierre Bonnard). They felt very privileged as they had a nutritious lunch which was provided by the NGV. We are hearing that all the students loved the lunch so much that they devoured it, with some students asking for seconds! How thoughtful of the NGV to do this for us. Did we mention that the Art Gallery crew also had a presentation about Pierre Bonnard which showcased some of his very famous artworks such as the 'White Cat', 'Fruit Bowl' and much more? On top of the two workshops, the students experienced another exhibit called 'Up Down and All Around'. The workshop had games and blocks where students could construct buildings and make fantastic drawings. We interviewed a few of our students about what they thought of the NGV and here is what they said:
I loved how they gave us information on famous artists such as Pierre Bonnard and way more because I got to learn facts I didn't know before! -Mohammed Kayes 5/6D
I liked the workshop because we got to do painting and express our ideas and creativity! -Layla 5/6D
A big thank you to Mrs Hibbins and Miss Apostolakis for organising such a wonderful excursion for our SLC students! We also need to mention Mr Kullar, Mr Roberts and Mrs Stubbings who ensured it all went smoothly.
Our Learning Achievements
As previously mentioned, we have been achieving so many learning goals in all subject areas. In Reading, the SLC students have been reading a variety of texts and identifying the author's purpose and their intended audience. They have also been identifying the language features and the deliberate choices the author has made. Many of the students are producing an exemplary reader's notebook and have done a fantastic job in expanding on their thinking and sharing the impact it has on them as a critical reader. Overall, we are very proud of our SLC students with some students having their work displayed on our Reading wall!
In Writing, the SLC students have been crafting up letters to persuade our Principal Team to revise our Student Leadership Positions (The positions they believe would make our 2024 Student Leadership Team Awesome!) Please keep in mind that this has never ever happened in the history of the SLC in over 100+ years. The students have been dedicated and put their hearts towards this subject. Students are very aware that our wonderful Principal Team are very open to their thinking and will take on board their ideas and suggestions. We are in the publishing stage right now, and it won’t be long before they are delivered to our lovely Principal Mrs Cottier and Assistant Principal Ms Jamar.
Parliament Role Model Incursion
On Friday the 13th, our SLC students were lucky enough to engage in a Parliament Role Model Incursion. We learnt about the three states of government, how they pass bills and the process of making federal laws. The students got assigned special roles like real members of parliament and some students even got to wear SPECIAL black gowns; and gee they role-played beautifully! Not only did we have fun, but we also filled our brains with LOTS of knowledge towards learning about politics and governments. Let me just say the parliamentarians were SUPER impressed with how we engaged, and the incursion ended with success!
Healesville Excursion - More Learning Achievements!
In Projects, the SLC students have been learning about ADAPTATION. You might be wondering what adaptation is! Adaptation is the physical or behavioural feature of an animal that helps them better survive in their environment. For example, ducks have webbed feet to swim faster in the water! How lucky were they to build on this learning by going to Healesville Sanctuary. In Maths, some students have the chance to create their ‘ideal’ itinerary based on what they would like to see at Healesville Sanctuary. They did an exceptional job creating an awesome itinerary so we could use our time wisely and efficiently when we were there!
At the Healesville excursion, the students had the opportunity to see native Australian animals and learn about two animals including the platypus and wallabies. They learnt that the male platypus has a poisonous spur, a bill and thick fur to stay warm in winter and keep themselves safe from predators. They also got to watch a spectacular bird show called 'Spirits of The Sky'. They saw a bird named Bernese, who was a very stubborn bird from what we saw! There was also a bird called the wedge-tailed eagle which is the biggest bird of the Birds of the Prey. Its wingspan is about 2 metres long. After the show students got to explore the sanctuary to see tree kangaroos, emus, birds and much more. We interviewed a few students on what they thought and here is what they said:
I enjoyed having fun with my friends and experiencing nature. -Bella 5/6D
I loved the birds displayed in the show called 'Spirits of the Sky' because they were really interesting. -Mahirah 5/6D
FLC Chesterfield Farm Excursion
Just recently, our lucky FLC students from both campuses had the opportunity to see some animals too, at Chesterfield farm! They were so excited and could not wait to meet the farm animals! The children engaged in enjoyable activities such as going inside a petting enclosure, patting the farm animals and learning more about them- including how to feed them properly! How LUCKY are they? Students got to also feel the amazing breeze as well as listen to nature sounds while engaging in a tractor ride. They learnt how wool is harvested from sheep and how dogs can follow commands. It was DELIGHTFUL to hear that the FLC engaged positively with the animals, staff and each other. Well done FLC!! We interviewed some of the students and here's what they said.
“I like the chicks because they’re cute” - 01C Nadia
“My favourite thing was patting the rabbits because they are cute and soft” - F1D Crystal
“I like seeing the horse because it’s my favourite animal” - F1D Najib
We are extremely proud of the FLC students stepping out of the school and demonstrating all our school values, a big thank you to all the teachers for organising this spectacular adventure!
In conclusion, the last fortnight has been super successful. We have smashed lots of learning goals and have achieved all our success criteria.
