Year 9 Debating Team’s Debut Double Win

On the evening of Wednesday 30 April, the Oxley Christian College D Grade (Year 9) Interschool Debating Team met at Tintern Grammar to participate in our first ever debate. Our topic was whether Phone use should be taught as a learning tool in schools, with both Oxley teams being on the negative side of the debate.

Despite unrivalled nerves, the two teams outperformed any preconceived expectations, securing wins for both teams. Team 1 was represented by Cindy C (9.9), Nicole M (9.9)and Elijah L (9.10). Team 2 was represented by Mahi J (9.9), Celina W-M  (9.9) and Steffan S (9.9).

Congratulations to Team 1 who won against Vermont Secondary College, with Nicole and Cindy awarded best speakers for the night. Team 2 was also victorious against Yarra Valley Grammar. Notably, Mahi, Celina and Steffan were also awarded best speakers of their debate!

Thank you to Mrs Sharon Sandison and all on the team who came to support on the night. Special thanks to Mrs Rebekah Paul for her hard work coaching us. Overall, it was a highly successful event, in which all debaters did an exemplary job of representing the College.
