It’s been an incredibly busy start to the term and we have appreciated students and families embracing the inconsistent start to the term. Despite being a very shortened week, attendance was really high and that support from families to ensure that students are at school has enabled us to make the most of the first days of term and learning for our next units of work has begun.
On Thursday, our staff were privileged to engage in professional development aimed at understanding our community and students better. This PD has helped guide our direction as a school over the last 15 years and strengthens our community-minded-approach so we are glad to be able to revisit it with the number of new staff we have in the College. This helps strengthen the culture and ethos of the school that our community has come to appreciate.
Our student leadership group have been exceptionally active and are getting involved in the community. They are expanding their knowledge and capacity in leadership at the same time as representing their students and community. We were proud to see the student leader group out together at ANZAC Day, recognising this important event and paying respects to veterans together. Our School Captains laid a wreath on behalf of the College.
This week, our Year 9 Student Leaders are engaging in the Global Youth Forum which sees them engage in learning with the University of Melbourne and with other student leaders around Australian and the world. They heard from Anya Granados, a young leader from the Phillipines herself, who had started her own global initiatives group. They will take this learning into creating their own project in the school or wider community and work with the broader student leader group on implementation. Later in the year, they will go to Melbourne to meet with other schools who are also undertaking the forum.
In a few weeks, the Year 7 and 8 Student Leaders will engage with the Emerging Leaders Forum in a similar vein.
We are so pleased to see such an active group of student leaders this year leading our student community.
Our Year 10s have commenced Work Experience this week and nearly every one has successfully found a placement for at least one week of work, with most placed both weeks. This is an important learning experience for the students, with many establishing new ideas for future career pathways and some eliminating career options as a result of work experience. We have even had some end up in apprenticeships in the past as a result of their excellent engagement with their work experience placement.
Whatever the outcome, we know that our Year 10s will be representing their school well and getting the most from this opportunity. We look forward to having them back in two weeks with a clearer direction for their futures.
