Sydney and Bundanon Art Immersion Tour

April 29 – May 2

Senior Visual Art students from Belmont High School joined Western Heights College on an immersive art tour of Sydney and Bundanon. The experience was designed to complement their VCE Art studies through hands-on learning and exposure to contemporary Australian art and culture.

The Bundanon properties, gifted by Arthur and Yvonne Boyd in 1993, now serve as a centre for creativity and education. Located on Dharawal and Dhurga Country, Bundanon encourages artistic exploration within its unique cultural and natural landscape.

On the first day, students visited the Art Gallery of NSW and enjoyed the sights of Sydney Harbour.

The following day we travelled to Bundanon, which included a tour of Arthur Boyd’s historic homestead and an en plein air painting and drawing workshop of the iconic ‘Arthur’s Rocks’.

We stayed for two nights at the newly architecturally built ‘The Bridge’ at the Bundanon Art Museum property, nestled in the Beautiful Shoalhaven Region. On our first evening, we were lucky to participate in an artist workshop with Traditional Owner Jaz Corr - a highlight of the tour.

The next day was filled with creative exploration. In the morning, students painted the surrounding landscape. In the afternoon, they created drawings and cardboard sculptures, which will contribute to Bundanon’s current exhibition, Thinking Together: Exchanges with the Natural World. In the evening, we participated in a photography workshop, learning to take ambiguous photos in low light.

On the final day, the group visited Seven Marks Gallery to view Jaz Corr’s powerful exhibition, Wounds, which explores themes central to the First Nation Peoples Australian experience.

A sincere thank you to all who participated, and to Western Heights College for inviting us to be part of this meaningful and inspiring experience.
