Book of the Week
Old Yeller
by Fred Gipson
14-year-old Travis lives on a ranch in Texas with his family. When his father goes away on a long cattle drive, Travis must be ‘man of the family’ until he gets back. There’s a lot of responsibility on young Travis’ shoulders, and when a stray dog wanders onto the property one day, he fears there’ll be nothing but trouble.
Travis’ little brother Arliss names the dog ‘Yeller’ for his golden-yellow coat, and the two quickly become inseparable, despite Travis trying to run the dog off the ranch. When ‘Yeller’ saves Arliss from a bear attack, Travis comes to rely on the old dog to help him run the ranch. Travis and ‘Yeller’ will protect each other from any danger; any foe, but Texas is a wild place, and a tragic accident forces Travis to have to do something he never imagined.
‘Old Yeller’ is a classic coming-of-age story, perfect for readers aged 12 years and older, and filled with lots of adventure, danger, and action.
