Micro Mathematician
During the school holidays, on the 8th of April, I got an invitation to attend a special program conducted by the University of Melbourne called Micro Mathematician. This program is an enrichment initiative aimed at students who have an interest in maths beyond the classroom.
You could attend the session face-to-face with your teacher at the University of Melbourne, or you could do it virtually from home. The session lasted for 90 minutes and was highly interactive. We had a group of 30 kids from different schools across Victoria sharing how they solved the questions.
We learned about ‘Sequences’ in maths. They shared activities where we had to come up with answers using the Problem-sloving approach, and later explain how we arrived at our solution. It was a great learning experience. Everyone came up with different solutions to the activities. Even I got a chance to explain my way of solving!
I loved how they encouraged everyone to participate and so that everyone got a turn to speak. They shared how Mathematicians apply Critical Thinking when solving a problem.
Who knew maths is everywhere we go?
Sadly, the class came to an end. I couldn’t believe how much I had learned in just 90 minutes. I felt so excited to have learned new things and couldn’t wait to apply my learnings to the real world.
